Douglas County High School

I'm looking to hear the good and the bad. I hear from one group of people that this school is full of thugs and thug wanna bes. I hear from others that this is were some special academic program is. We are looking at a home right now that is zoned for there. What is the real story?

If you absolutely have to put them in the DC School system......I think the Alexander district would be the best. Unfortunately, the county is full of thugs and thug wanna bes. However, I believe it is a direct result of the lack of parent envolvement and teachers having no support from the parents of the "problems". Good luck in your new venture but I would be very Cautious about the school district you are moving into.

The IB program is at Douglas County High, however you have to be very,very smart to get in and I'm not quite sure at all the different things they look at to get in. I know of a lady who's child was there and she ended up taking him out and sending him to Lithia where he is still at. This child just interviewed with MIT. Every school has it's good and bad I agree with the other person it takes parent involvement and communicating with your child. If you've taught them well they will do well. Like to stay away from certain types of people and crowds.

My son is in the IB program at DC. The IB program was deliberately housed at DC to "clean up" the school. You can only enter the program as a freshman. D C is not where I would want my child if he could not be in the IB program. I agree with Wess12 -- Alexander is the place to be.

I went to both Lithia Springs and Doulas County High School. I saw a few fights at Lithia Springs, though I have heard of assaults on teachers there and apparently students from Lithia Springs tried to burn down the gym at Douglas. Douglas County seemed less violent (although over all, the Lithia Springs building was more interesting as well as the classes), but I have heard from people and the news that it has become a more dangerous school.

Not that my kids tried any another school in DC, but they were not happy at DC High. One of them dropped out during the senior year and finished at Ombsunden (how ever you spell it)The other one was involved in band and marching band - which was disapointing for her, as there were few members, there fore they sucked at competions.

The IB Program is only used as a way to keep DCHS out of trouble academically. It is used to increases the scores for the school.

Our son (us as parents) were begged to go into this program.

Why? I'm told it is an excellent program and really challenges the students.

I removed my daughter from Douglas County High School during her Junior year. She was miserable and my normally happy straight A student hated school. We enrolled her in private school where she graduated a year early with honors! I would never send one of my children back to Stewart Middle School or Douglas County High School. My daughter did not attend Stewart (she went to Yeager) but I had a son at Stewart. They need to close that school and just start over, oh wait, they would have the same thugs so that wouldn't work either.

I know several kids in the IB program at DC....it's a great program. I'm trying to get my child in and will be happy to send him to DC. The kids I know have interest from many colleges across the country and even some Ivy League schools. You can't get that from the crappy private schools we have here. You'd have to send your child to East Point or N. Atlanta to get an equal education and the attention from the better colleges.

Anon,I hope you make the correct choice.I worry about how this School it has went down the tubes.When my Son's were there you couldn't get a parking place as you had to pay for them.I would of paid extra to get one my point is the lot has been empty for year's.I would worry about safety.

While IB is an excellent program, it is not the only good thing at DC. Last year's star student for the county came from DC and he was not in IB. When was the last time any of you visited the school or spent some time there?

Here! Here! There are many very good things about DC. I know several students and they are well adjusted kids and rarely have issues at the school.

When your child is in AP Classes, it is the same learning process and the kids get a better life and High School experience. He was Gove honor and National Honor Society student w/ 4.0

Do not let your child be exposed to the "Thug Nation" or you will regret your decisions!

Two DCHS kids: Child #1 graduated with honors (3.95 GPA, I think) a couple of years ago in AP classes and is currently an all A student at a local college. She wasn't interested in the IB program.

Child #2 is currently there, doing OK, a bit lower GPA than #1. Some of his sports teammates and friends are in IB and I hear it is a LOT of work.

There were some challenges along the way, but some very good people at the school.

Good for you but IB at Douglas County has been a good experience and I encourage other parents to consider it.

unless you are connected to the Douglas County School system you can forget getting your child into the IB program! It's a program that is geared toward the teachers children and other even though they out tested and out performed the other children don't get in.

Huh? Not sure I follow your first comment. Do you mean unless you live in Douglas County, or do you mean you must have some personal "connection"?

If it's the former, I'm OK with that. Actually, I'd prefer Douglas County resident students in the program.

If it's the latter, I think you're mistaken.

I know pretty well 5 kids in the IB program, 3 of them from outside the DCHS district, but all Douglas County residents. None of them are "connected" to the school system, although one family has lived in the DCHS district for many years and knows a lot of people.

Please explain.

My child who tested a lot higher then at least two students I know (both children of teachers in the DC system) was rejected for the IB program when I took this to the board I was basically told to write an letter and complain. Needless to say this didn't do me any good. Unless you have connections and know people you get no where. So we are just happy with the AP classes at Alexander.

i know nothing of the ib program but my kids will not go to dc or lithia.
