How much will the Columbus area have to suffer this go around? Remeber the murders, rapes, robberies and other crimes being commited by the returning soliders. I for one dont believe the hype of PTSD. If its that bad the Army really needs to do something. Why do the citizens of the area have to suffer. And by the way, they fought for me to have his opinion. What say you?

I think that you have lost your mind if you think that the Soldiers are a problem in this community. I am from Columbus and have lived here most of my life. I have family in law enforcment and I know that the problem of crimes in this area is more from low life druggies and people who have had no proper upbringing.

If anything the area is benefiting from the Soldiers since they bring income into the local economy. If it wernt for Fort Benning then Columbus would not be the large town it is today. If they were to shut down Benning then Columbus would go down the toilet too.

PTSD is a problem knucklehead. If you have never had it before, don't say there is no such thing

As in any community you will have those that will bring a bad image to the greater good. I certainly won't judge all of our soldiers by the criminals you speak of. Unfortunately the news has a way of making the problems seem greater than the good.

The Army gets its people from communities all over the country, many like ours. The fact that the army may have more troubled youths from all over our country concentrated in one area is a problem. However, I feel that more of these troubled youths are helped by the army and become better citizens, then the few outliers you speak of.

It is true that the military has its hands full and is not equipped to handle the problems that some of these soldiers bring back with them. This includes, but is not limited to PTSD and alcoholism. Yes this is a problem.

As a community, we must be aware of the problems and the potential for crime and abuse. I believe our local government works well with the commanders on base and that they are trying to address these concerns and probably many you we are not even aware of.

In my neighborhood, ALL of the problems are being caused by civilians, people who call Columbus home. I'm more worried about some of the locals than the fine folks in the military.

Well posted Ron.

Sorry to be another voice, but Soldiers as a class are not a problem. I know you just saw the horrific stabbing in the barracks, but did you miss the three shootings downtown that were not military related? Or the rape, robbery, burglary, etc that is being committed by your non-military neighbors?

When I was stationed at Benning, I had the opionion that Columbus was a decent town. Sure it had crime, just like any other city of comparable size. Of course, the military always had a couple of problem soldiers, but once the soldiers were apprehended they were always disciplined and if the crime warranted sent home or incarcerated. Many of our troops are currently under great amounts of stress and most do not seek sympathy or use it as an excuse for unacceptable behaviour. Thank God for our fine troops and thanks to the citizens of Columbus, GA for being good hosts. Wish I had all the money back I spent out there on Victory Drive.
