I have read several accounts of police getting caught in can windows and dragged because the driver of the car takes off. What I don't understand is why when an officer stops a car he does not require the driver to turn the car off and remove the keys from the ignition. That would sure stop a lot of drive-offs and officer injuries.

Andy, Andy, Andy... you need to chill a bit there buddy. Too much stress is not good for you. Look at this as light entertainment not serious society shaking events.

It's probably a small police force. The chief may have to get his bu*tt out there to do some actual work once in a while.

Because he was not following safe procedures.

If there is a dash cam the guy will probably get off of the serious charges.

If this incident happened like most of the police stuck in window dragging. It went like this, the violator decided to get away and tries to drive off, this infuriates the officer who does something stupid like reach in the window and grab at the guy. It is not the officers fault but lets look at this your dealing with a multi ton moving vehicle now, you are likely going to get hurt. A smart street officer will not likely try this, usually because they have tried it before and it did not work or watched someone else do the same. The chief being an admin puke is not so tactically sound and apt to get dragged.

It is hard to hold someone accountable for aggravated assault when you are the one who put yourself in jeopardy which would be evident on the dash cam. However we are talking about small town justice so no telling what will happen. It reminds me of when someone steps out in front of a shoplifter’s car that is trying to get away and they wants the driver charged with hitting them.

Not following safe procedures but he knows that now.

It should go like this .... The officer says ..... "please hand me your drivers license, registration and keys".

You're an idiot. Perhaps we should just let criminals run amok? Whatever happened to respect for the law? If you have better sense than the Chief, then you should be a policeman, yourself.

Nobody said it took any intelligence to be a cop.

how so every person lay down and let the bad guys run the show yes the chief might have made a bad split second choice yes standing infront of a vehicle might be a bad split second choice. but they made a choice its kinda like saying a young female made a choice to go out to a club and then gets raped its her fault and not the guy who also made a choice to break the law give it a rest and quit bashing the heros who stand up for what is right

I got to wonder if Lawman and Reality Bites Me have not been drug by cars before and want credit for trying to stop the car in such a macho way.

I say work smarter not harder. Grab the guys hair and let him see if he wants to drive off. Do anything but stick your arm in and hang on while the car drives off.

actually I've never been drug by a car but I know what happens when you have a split second to make a choice. and then people who sit on couches and watch to much CSI miami and think they know what it takes to be a cop sit around and monday morning quarterback your choice.until you live it don't act like you know it.

It's sad. Not one post of any sympathy or concern for this officer. It's not surprising in Atlanta though. The inmates are running the assylum more and more everyday. I just try to remember that most people with a poor attitude towards the police have had "formal contact" with the police. In short, I consider the source.
