Full story: Inside Bay Area

Q Can you please settle a dispute between my sister and me? We were driving down Mission Boulevard when I coughed and then spit out the window.

Obamanation my ass! This is the kind of crazy stuff the Republicans would like to outlaw, along with all drugs, abortions, taxes (especially for the fat cats!), porno and any sex except with your wife. Other than that they say keep the government out of our lives. Uh huh!

This Earth is not a "toilet" for people to spit on. Everybody needs to learn how to respect it. You wouldn't like it if I spit on your shoes, or on your porch, or worse yet, in your face? Common sense dictates how disgusting spitting is unless in it's in a tissue. So when there are those of you out there who lack "common sense", the law needs to step in. Quit crying "Big Brother" just because you can't get away with murder.

Oh there is a difference between spitting inside a building or (even worse!) spitting on the floor in someone's home or just spitting out the window while driving a car. Seems to me that the cops should be more interested in stopping reckless and drunk drivers than petty nonsense like this. Guess the cop had a bad day or maybe didn't get that BJ from he old lady last night or quite possibly he was just an a-hole. I hope great respect for cops, most of them do a terrific job under dangerous and stressful conditions but as in every profession there are a few a-holes and dummies and clowns on a power trip. No ticket, no big deal though so I'd just forget it if it was me!

If you tend to ignore the little things in life, you most likely will ignore the bigger things also. There are exceptions to every rule of course. Wouldn't it just be easier to be considerate of others than to assume, "That damned drunk is getting away without a ticket, why can't I"?

Basically, if you get caught (no matter how trite you think it is), take your ticket - and GROW UP.

We aren't sheep and there is a time to question authority. Otherwise we may end up with a society like Nazi Germany! There is a BIG difference between driving drunk and spitting out the window of a car. Nothing at all wrong with saying "This is petty!" or "This is BULLSHIT!" when a cop or anybody else over-reacts to a particular situation. Of course you may not have a leg to stand on in court but nothing wrong with expressing your displeasure to anyone who will listen. Sometimes by going to persons higher up on the ladder of authority you can even resolve to issue to your satisfaction.

Spitting in public is a disgusting habit that died out when people became aware of the dangers of chewing tobacco and it lost its prevalence. However, a lot of immigrants still believe it is acceptable to spit in public because this is imprinted by their backwards culture. The Chinese spit a lot, mostly the older ones. San Francisco is full of spit on the sidewalks and streets (along with crap and piss from homeless).

I believe though in the Singaporean approach to public hygiene: spitting in public should earn you a flogging, or at least an extremely harsh fine. If you can't embarrass people into civil behavior, I guess you have to beat them into it, or coerce them into it, what is the alternative?

Some may think it draconian, but spitting is a menace to public health, in addition to being visually obnoxious and disgusting.

I can agree with everything except the quote above.

This whole discussion sounds like a bunch of high-horse riding white assholes that take ignorance to a whole different level.

The sorry excuse for patriotism as a means of judging one's behavior is equivalent to saying all "pretty people" should only reproduce because the ugly population is getting to big. Who the hell are you to judge a persons behavior because they SPIT... with or without tobacco.

I spit on sidewalks or in the street, sometimes because I just felt like it. I'm perfectly healthy, I don't even get bothered by allergies... and if someone said in the distance "go take your spitting to one of those other damn 3rd world countries!".. I'd proceed to either ignore them, reply- stating how stupid an ignorant remark like that is, beings I was born here and I'll spit anywhere I damn-well please... or if I thought I could get away with it I'd punch you in the face for acting like you were somehow smarter, better, more fit in society, or any other kind of smart ass remark about how better you are fit to live here than me.

Fuck you.

To wow, you're the kind of antisocial obnoxious moron that back in the days of the frontier might have wound up swinging from a gallows while the rest of the town laughed and jeered. Not because of your spitting. That was de riguer back in the wild west before they had much science. They didn't know about oral cancer being caused by tobacco, and they didn't have a very good understanding of disease transmission. Even so, "ladies" never spat in public. It was unseemly and against decorum.
The reason you would have been an outcast is that you obviously can't behave properly simply for the sake of doing so. You appear to be one of those people that if given the exercise of free will, will promptly abuse it. Your rights in a free society end where those of others begin. Spitting in public is obscene and as mentioned, a menace to public health. It doesn't matter if you're healthy or not...it is a social problem.
If everyone spits, or is free to do so, there will certainly be a mess, and the consequences are a social nuisance even when they are not an outright menace.
I shouldn't even have to make an elaborate explanation of that, but clearly you don't have a good grasp of the concept of personal vs social conduct.
Yes, perhaps you were born and raised here, but clearly with about the same attention to manners and social graces as some fresh-off-the-boat immigrant from some overpopulated, culturally retarded hellhole, where spitting in public might be socially acceptable, along with numerous other unhygienic and disgusting habits.
Clearly you have feelings of inferiority about your intelligence or fitness for society, and there is a good reason why; your attitude frankly sucks, and you've already demonstrated your poor citizenship. I would be surprised if most people with education and a good upbringing *didn't* look down on that kind of behavior. IF you want to be respected by others, you need to earn it. That means conducting yourself in a way that is respectful of others. "Do as I damn well please" is not a good foundation for getting along with other people.
