If people are really stupid enough to click on a spam e-mail, or something they do not recognize, they deserve whatever happens. The spammers are preying on the stupid & gullible. It's really sad that there are so many of these people out there.

Symantec issues press releases like this every time they want to bolster sales.

Yes, spam is a horrible problem, and one made much worse by Microsoft's horrible record of releasing beta software for users to buy and test for them.
