I live in Harrogate and I've never seen any kids going through trashcans, that's ridiculous. There are a lot of welfare cases and druggies but no homeless people unless you want to count Charlie Bob, but he sure as hell doesn't look like he's starving.

Ok I am not bad mouthing mission trips because I have been on several, but this article just knocked us back into the this sterotypical stigma of "poor appalachian hill folk" that we have to come in a rescue.I have lived here all my life and never have I seen a kid eating out of a dumpster or trashcan. I know alot of people struggle from day to day to make ends me but this article just seems very degrading to the people of this area and this is just my opinion.

I haven't lived in Claiborne Co. for a while but when I did everyone was fat and sassy, most of your poor people are the fat ones because they don't work off their ribeyes that they eat thanks to the hard working plant employees who pay for the moochers food stamps..............

Now, people from this community know how Hancock County folks feel about the media's portrayal of their community.

I agree with you that this article seems degrading to the people of the area. I have lived in Claiborne County since 1967 and I have never seen anyone eating out of a trash can. I also agree that a lot of people probably struggle, but there are lots of jobs here compared to many other mostly rural counties.

Jaynie Jo - PLEASE tell me where the jobs are! I've been looking for three months. I'm college educated - BUT my last name is not Ball, Duncan, Giles, England, Ellis, Rose, Patterson, Poore, and whoever else. So any direction you can point me in would be a tremendous help :)

land of oz, when I said that there are more jobs here than in many other mostly rural counties around here, I was thinking especially of Hancock County where I have relatives living. Their only factory (I think it was the only one, not real sure) closed leaving more than 125 people out of work. That is a lot of people to put out of work in a very small county. I didn't mean to say that there are lots of jobs here, just that there are more than some places, I think. I am so very sorry that you have been looking for a job that long and haven't found anything. If I hear of anything I will post it on here for you, okay?

This is seriously messed up. I know I don't give the people of Tazewell a whole lot of credit for being smart, but they aren't cruel. I don't think I've ever seen anyone eating out of a trashcan but I'm sure if anyone had they'd give them food.

Much appreciated :) It's just that as part of "picking up an application", I've been asked who I'm related to...not a good sign, for me :(

you people in clarksville need to check out this church that gives this information to the newspaper, we here in claiborne county (harrogate, new tazewell) have no clue to where and what this article is speaking of. yes, there are poor folks here but this person writing this article is delirious in describing the "trashcan" and "parks" incidents. was this some momma's boy passing along incorrect information to make him seem worthy of momma's praise? i am certainly bringing this article to the county mayor's attention so he may take appropriate action as this county's major leader.

I think you're right with the momma's boy analogy. "How was your trip to sub-Saharan Tazewell son?" ...."Oooh mother...it twas a savage land, sparse civilization, no Super Walmart or Starbucks within 50 miles. The people were dirty and wreeked of quality built rocker recliners. While having seventeen honky tonks they have some how managed to only have one small library. The children eat out of granny's trash can due to the fact that the OLde Towne grill sucks, and the Mexican restaurant has mice. But their is one bright spot of my trip,..I joined the Clinch River Society.!?
