Rescue Squad Offering EMT Basic Training Course
#1 Jan 14, 2011
If it's a real EMT-Basic class, it's a whole lot more than just "CPR & Ways to control bleeding". Real EMT's are well trained health professionals, and spend 125-150 hrs learning Trauma Care, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cardiology, Psychology, Mental Health, and 20 other medical topics. When the finish, there is a NATIONAL (not merely state) exam, and they are considered a well trained medical person. EMT-Basics have to glow about 90% of what a Paramedic does. This is not a simple First Aid course, as your article implies

Just curious "ex-paramedic" what kind of EMT course do you think it is? It's clearly the same EMT course I took, and the same one YOU took to become a Paramedic. Sounds like you're pretty grumpy about not being a Paramedic anymore...

If it's the real National Standards course, it offers quite a bit more than just "Band Aids & CPR.... That's all I was saying.....
No, I'm not grumpy about not being a Paramedic.... Disappointed perhaps, because I loved it, but an injury I received during a difficult rescue makes that impossible now. I retired as Administrator of the department though, and enjoyed working with such dedicated people. I still can feel proud of all the people we saved, all the babies I delivered, and all the Spinal Injury victims we handled correctly, and who are walking today.....
I think all EMT's, from Basic to Paramedic are unsung heroes, and for this article to give the impression they simply First Aid, does an incredible disservice to the skills of those dedicated people....

I think the news was trying to summarize the basic's of the course not down play what the course offers. You are correct. It is 150 hours of classroom lecture with practicals. Once completed you are medically trained to treat all kinds of illnesses and problems. Airway, Breathing, Circulation, CPR, Giving limted amount of medications, controlling bleeding, splinting, backboarding, delivering babies, and the list will go on forever. I think that was NBC 29's way of summarizing the course for the general public. No harm or foul towards EMS providers.
