Bad news for supporters of Sioux nickname

The Associated Press 11:10 a.m. -- University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella says the NCAA has denied the school's second appeal to keep using its Fighting Sioux nickname in postseason tournaments.

I am part Native American, and I too support the Fighting Sioux name and logo, however, it is because of attitudes and comments like Jordan's "Screw the Indians" that UND will NOT be able to keep the Fighting Sioux name and logo. His racist statement is one reason why the NCAA is taking it away, not because of the "indians".

People in NoDak aren't all idiots. Even those who support keeping the name, which is wrong, are decent folks, not all racists. This dingbat at the start is just a troll trying to stir stuff up for his own amusement.
The nickname and logo are insulting to lots of people, let's change the name like so many other schools have done and get over it. UND's always going to be about tremendous athletic teams (Especially hockey!) and a lot of pride for those of us who love the team, and we'll continue to love them if they're called something else. |

I hate the nickname, I always have, its embarassing as UND almumni. I don't think the name is used in a rascist way, but the supporters sure use rascist arguments, and the logo is awful. I think its just time to move on from the name, just change it. It really makes UND and the supporters of the nickname look bad. Its really a childish debate...

Forget JJ from Fargo. Racists such as that should not be listened to. But as far as changing the name goes, why? It is not an insult to the Souix and was never meant to be. It is a compliment if anything.

Most of you kids don't know what you're talking about, you're just yelling with no sense or logic behind it. the name Fighting Sioux is a name of pride. the logo is not ugly, but fierce. in my opinion, and i am part indian, i don't think the name should change. yes, there are some people who think that the name should be changed because it offends indians. how about the altanta braves, or the cleveland indians, or the washington redskins? should all of these teams change their team names? i don't think so.

What do you think Ralph would have to say about this? I hav't heard about any Native Americans giving back there land payment checks.Native Americans is two parts,the second being AMERICANS! I think we should turn the arena into a bingo parlor,then we could all sit next to each other and have fun!

Standing Rock "Warriors"' Turtle Mountain "Indians"; What do these towns and schools all have in common? They are all North Dakota Reservation towns, and these are their High School Mascot names. Why are some people offended by "Fighting Sioux" but not offended by the names of the mascots for the towns above? I think the Fighting Sioux should change their mascot name if these towns change their names...but until this happens ... I say leave everything as is and everyone should find more important issues to fight about. |
