At Hammonasset, An Indian Kite Flying Festival Gets Competitive
His eyes aloft, Pankaj Patel of Hampton was surrounded Sunday by seven children - some his own, some his siblings' and some just friends - all asking for a turn at flying the tiny kite overhead.

I would like to start by thanking everyone involved in getting this event such a grand success.
First thanks goes to Prerana & Devang from Baroda they were the ones who made all this possible by making sure that the 700 kites and 55 phirkies(string for flying kites) were delivered to us here in the USA in perfect condition. As you all know all the kites already had the “Kinna” done and as you can imagine doing the kina for 700+ kites is no small thing either. On Saturday June 14 all of us Biren & Dimple, Dipak, Dipen, Hardik & Minal, Hemal & Nupur, Hiren, Ketan, Manish, Pankaj & Manisha, Pranav & Shital, Pravin, Sanjay & Ami, and Viren & Hetal got together at my place to do the kina for all these kites. About 8-10 days prior to the Kite Flying picnic day Nikita started the food preparation, everyone that have come to our parties knows this well – Nikita loves to cook and does not like having a single item catered – everything had to be prepared by her only. The day before on Saturday July 19 we had Nikita’s mom, Nita, Pankaj & Manisha, Pranav & Shital & Shital Shah all there helping with the final cooking preparation for the big day on Sunday. They could not have done everything without the help of our lovely daughters – Anjali, Kelly, Priya, Priyal, Serena Mistry, Sarina, Sheel & Shimoli they were all a BIG help all day to the moms. The day of the event of this magnitude – to give an idea last year we had 128 people including kids that were there, this year we had over 270+ people, we needed a lot of help in getting this day through. I thank all my friends without them this could not have been possible – naming people for Sunday would not be appropriate if I missed anybody so “Thank you all”. |
