I remember the gravel streets,
Hank and anns restaurant,
shooting pool at rubes,
junior high at blue island junior high and high school at eisenhower.
The snow storm in 1967 was great too.
Howell airport was still there.
almost nothing was on cicero at that time.
everybody knew each other.

I remember going to Hank & Anns as a kid. The Gill & Kwill(I am not sure of the correct spelling) and Smitttys or the Alpine for dinner or to play the bowling game with my brothers as our father solved world problems with other neighbor hood guys. Cicero ave was only two lanes in each direction. We had the sub-divisions of Playfield, the Gardens and the Old Section. I played at Howell airport. There was only one Nathan Hale school. My older brother played little league baseball at the diamon on the corner of Lavergne and 135th street.I went to Blue Island School only for 7th grade and then moved over to the new open middle school.I remember when the plane crashed where the old Kentucky Fried Chicken is, and I still live here raising my own family. I can think of 40 other residents still residing here who are within 5 years of my age plus or minus.

Hi I was doing some research on Howell Airport and I was wondering if you knew the date of that plane crash. I hope I hear from you.

Great Memories; I lived in the old section, last street to get sewers and paved streets. Every summer they put the tar over the streets and in the heat tar bubbles would form, fun to pop as a kid but got all over your bike tires. Hank and Anns sounds so familiar, was that the name before Twos Company there on Cicero next to the Old State Police station. I used to fish in Rubins Ditch behind what later became the Eldorado (now gone). There used to be a tiny store and hotel there, perhaps 3 rooms. The field behind Eldorado had excellent minibike paths and jumps in the early 70's, burms, it was like a forest back there; now it's a soccer field. There were also great forests (or they felt like forests) in the blocks behind where Shopmart is now. Excellent places to explore as a kid. No longer there. Roller Wheels was the place to be in the mid to late 70s. Remember getting my haircut at a barber next to Gary's in Playfield Plaza and kids hitting homeruns into/over the creek behind the major league field. Fastpitch behind nathan hale, a home run if you could hit it to the grass on a fly. There used to be a place where you can buy dogs (not hotdogs but real dogs) on cicero around 138th, and the crestwood library used to be in the back of the police department. The siren always went off at 1030 every Tuesday morning. Loud if you lived down the block. The streets used to flood in the Old Section of Crestwood when it rained as there were no sewers (only septic tanks which bring other less pleasant memories). I remember floating toys out the window and finding them blocks away later. I remember my neighbors going down 138th court in a canoe. White Hen was the only store around and they only let 2 kids in at a time; Had to wait in line to get my cherry Bubs Daddy. Went through all the Nathan Hale schools, was one of the first graduating classes at the Middle School. It was all open, really no walls or half walls between the classes, very unusual, brick streets, stop lights, principal worked in the "Mayors Office", I heard later they put up more walls to let the kids concentrate. There's an idea. Santa used to go around on a firetruck down the streets near Christmas time. Had to drive to Mottos if you wanted to go grocery shopping and return the 6 pack of pepsi bottles for deposit money. They could also cash your paycheck there. Times have changed. So many things on Cicero. The best little restaurant to ever come was Jr's Hotdogs. They were better than the rest and now they too are gone.

Summer of 1977, pilot was killed as the plane fell short of the runway. Landed on 127th Street into the guard rail, about 150 ft east of Cal Sag Rd.

That was KFC? I'm not arguing, I vaguely remember the incident but thought it was a Long John silver (were they around back then?) or a Brown's Chicken. Was a few years back......

I remember it differently. The airplane, a Mooney crashed on take off from Runway 31, the northwest runway & landed on the chicken/fast food restaurant.

The airplane was not based at Howell Airport, but only a visitor.

It was definately a KFC. It wasn't even a year old when the plane crashed. Stranzek was the mayor since I first moved there at age 8 in 1970. My grandpa was one of the first homeowners along central. I used to play hockey at Nathan Hale all the time(street hockey). My uncles back yard was at the end of one run way. you could see the KFC from his backyard. We drove past the airplane crash scene not knowing it happened. It was rested between the kfc and the intersection. Juniors hot dogs was the best.

I remeber the most of the volunteer fire department. They used to have a loud diren at the firestation and when it went off, the volunteers had these blue lights they put on their roofs and would rush to the fire dept. I remember 2 volunteer fire fighters on the way to the fire department coliding together at long ave and 135th st. I even remember 3 homes being knocked down to build the Lexington house. my parents still live there, my grandpa died about 15 years ago. He was a bar guy.
