Just weeks in office, Obama tarnishes his legacy

Full story: Lebanon Daily News

President Barack Obama signed the stimulus bill into law on Feb. 17. After the moment of the signing, he stood up and uttered, "It's done." In reality, he should have stood up and repeated what he said seconds ...

Once again the right screams, "The sky is falling!" when someone actually takes action. We hear how great the Reagan era was when, if I recall correctly, interest rates were through the roof and we were in a recession. George W. came to office after Clinton cleaned up the mess from his father, and drove the economy over a cliff along with many fallen soldiers. The only solution I've heard the Republicans propose is cutting taxes. President Obama did something. Maybe you don't like it; maybe you don't agree with it but he didn't hide in his office and do nothing. I hope his actions work but at least he tried. That's more than I've seen in many years.

What do you have against keeing your own money?

It worked for John F. Kennedy. I quote him:

"It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now ... Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus."
- John F. Kennedy, Nov. 20, 1962, president's news conference

"Lower rates of taxation will stimulate economic activity and so raise the levels of personal and corporate income as to yield within a few years an increased - not a reduced - flow of revenues to the federal government."
- John F. Kennedy, Jan. 17, 1963, annual budget
message to the Congress, fiscal year 1964

He reduced tax rates and Treasury receipts went up due to increased economic activity and the resulting job creation. You can look it up.

Kennedy is revered among Democrats. Was he wrong, Proud Democrat?

More memories from Camelot. Was Kennedy wrong here, too?

"It is no contradiction - the most important single thing we can do to stimulate investment in today's economy is to raise consumption by major reduction of individual income tax rates."
- John F. Kennedy, Jan. 21, 1963, annual message to the Congress: "The Economic Report Of The President"

"Our tax system still siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power and reduces the incentive for risk, investment and effort - thereby aborting our recoveries and stifling our national growth rate."
- John F. Kennedy, Jan. 24, 1963, message to Congress on tax reduction and reform, House
Doc. 43, 88th Congress, 1st Session.

"A tax cut means higher family income and higher business profits and a balanced federal budget. Every taxpayer and his family will have more money left over after taxes for a new car, a new home, new conveniences, education and investment. Every businessman can keep a higher percentage of his profits in his cash register or put it to work expanding or improving his business, and as the national income grows, the federal government will ultimately end up with more revenues."
- John F. Kennedy, Sept. 18, 1963, radio and television address to the nation on tax-reduction bill

When Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, he took the advice from former President Richard Nixon to concentrate on economic issues in his first six months in office. Reagan based an economic plan that had supply-side theory and operated on the belief that the economy was struggling in part because of excessive taxation. This plan took on the moniker of Reaganomics. With more money going to taxes, individuals and corporations were unable to invest capital to stimulate growth. The plan called for massive tax cuts to stimulate investments. The economic growth would then ‘trickle down’ to the workers. Inflation averaged 12.5 percent when Reagan entered office, was reduced to 4.4 percent when he left. Interest rates fell six points. Eight million jobs were created as unemployment fell. There was an eight percent growth in private wealth. Reagan put together legislation that cut government expenditures by $40 billion and created a three year tax cut plan for individual and corporate income taxes. The tax cut was the largest in history and jump started the economy.

'Proud to be a Democrat,' suggests the massive spending plan is a better alternative to cutting taxes or doing nothing. Obama has been in office six weeks. We do not have to wait six months for the Obama plan to take effect. We can already see and feel the devasting results of his so-called economic stimulus package every day, and it will continue until he is off the throne, and for many generations to come.

Pres Obama is following the California protocol. The California government implements programs, taxes, carbon tax, health care etc.

The carbon tax is hurting the industries that produce the jobs that pay the most to it's workers, which is manufacturing. Manufacturers are leaving CA to stay competitive.

Guess what, California is broke and is more than willing to take the money from the Feds.

Look out, the US is going to feel the same fate as California. But, who is going to bail out the US, CHINA?

As for Geo W. The only reason the Libs hated him so much was because he came under the label of Republican. GW increased fed spending and programs that would bring a smile to a Libs face.If he was a Dem, the Libs would be bowing to him like they still are to FDR!

Government is not the solution, it's the problem

Typical angry republicans response. I think it is a fair comparison to say that conservative Republicans are acting like southerners who believe that the South should of won the Civil War. When are republicans going to realalize that their idealogical thoughts of what America should be are not what Americans want. Maybe instead of pouting like a 5 year child who doesn't get their way, Republicans should reach across the aisle and work with Democrats in making this a better counrty compared to the divided country that we have become over the past 8 years under it's partys leadership.

In case you missed the point, the "right wing way" hasn't worked. Lower taxes on corporations so they can hire more people and develope alternative fuels and new technology. How has that worked out? They kept the extra money for themselves as bonuses, and unemployment rose. Send a few hundred dollars to the masses under the guise that they'll go out and spend it. They didn't; that move just put us more in debt. The Republicans take office, run the country into the ground until voters are totally disgusted, and the Democrats come in to once again clean up the mess.

We are at a huge push forward in American History. We - Black and White - overwhelmingly voted for change by the name of Barack Obama. I think he's a great role model as a father and husband. Thus far, he has shown that he is willing to listen and learn. He weighs the pros and cons, seeks input, and makes a decision. I haven't seen ANYONE make a better effort than President Obama. All the suggestions from Buster and Pennabitterclinger are old failed methods. Bob-poor W just wasn't smart enough. End of story. He scared the bejesus out of me because it was his way or the highway and he surrounded himself with "yes" men.

By the way, I was raised in Annville as a good little Republican. I changed my registration so I could vote for Clinton in the primary. Having been on both sides of the aisle, I'm happy where I am at the moment.

Obama won because the republican party abandoned its principles -- conservatism, smaller government, upholding the constitution, individual liberty -- and nominated a RINO in John McCain. The good news is that with the CPAC convention, it's becoming increasingly evident that conservatives are starting to get mad and getting ready to reclaim the GOP. For the record, Obama is great at staging press events, but the guy is an out-and-out Marxist. He puts on his great listening show, but he isn't about to let anyone talk him out of trying to institute a US of USSR. That's already evident in the fact that Robert Byrd is worried about the guy.
By the way, despite the Clinton recession and 9/11, the U.S. economy was in pretty good shape until Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and their good friends got Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy up all the garbage loans that Acorn and other community activists (who are getting a bundle from their mentor, Barack Obama, in the stimulus disaster) were forcing banks to make.

That was a really girly response. "Fe-e-e-e-elingssss, oh, oh, oh, Fe-e-e-e-lingsss."

And typically uninformed, just like the rest of the emotionally excitable Obama fetishists.

More than four million jobs were created following the tax rate reductions in 2001 and 2003. Who was president then? And how do you explain this apparent disconnect between your feelings and the reality of what history has proven tax cuts will do to increase economic activity, just as they did for John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan before Bush?

Republicans in Congress did overspend for eight years with the complicity of the Democrats and the president, but now you and the Democrats tell us that the way to fix things is to accelerate overspending? Puh-leeeze!

Even you don't believe that in your heart of hearts, do you?

Obama has declared war on the top 2% of earners, the job creators in America. Do you think that will have no impact on job seekers?

Obama has met the enemy, and, for the first time in our history, they "is" fellow Americans.

Wake up, lady. If Obama gets his way, we're all screwed.

Here's the funny part: Truman left office with a 22% approval rating -- lower than George Bush, but higher than the last Democrat-controlled 110th Congress.

A significant portion of Truman's party was angry that the Soviets had to use spies to get America's nuclear secrets. They thought Truman should have just sent them the drawings.

Some things never change, do they?

I think President Barack Obama is doing the best he can. What makes a country or a nation grows is not always seeing the negative side of things.Rather providing suggestions to what you think is wrong and not critising,For nobody is perfect.

It's not his legacy, it's the countries legacy. Position handed down. It should say Obama tarnishes countries legacy.
