Richard J. Kimble - Lamar Ledger

Richard Kimble – Hero & Friend
Richard and I have been friends since my early teens. His personality and quick smile were a big part of why I liked him. I quickly learned about his Vietnam experience and his love of music. It was obvious to anyone that knew him that his love of music was the dominate part of his life after Vietnam. He was able to adapt from Country & Western to Rock & Roll to TexMex at the drop of a hat. I know because I was in a band with him and our ability to play for parties that required diversity in music was a big reason for our success. My most recent memory of Richard was about four years ago when he invited me to his apartment and after a brief chat he picked up his guitar and we reminisced about our old band for most of the night. His love of music was contagious and I was quickly caught up with memories of our experiences.
But it is his military service that I remember the most. I was never a supporter of the Vietnam War and I remember Richard’s account of his return to the U.S. only to see Vietnam War protesters at Stapleton Airport. As he was recounting his experience to me, I did not give it much credence because I could have easily been one of those protesters. In 1975, I joined the U.S. Army and served for almost 10 years. I began to understand what Richard was telling me about the unity of a military unit and how that played an important part of how Richard survived the Vietnam War. Although I was in much smaller skirmishes than Richard, I can only imagine what it was like to live through that day after day.
I currently live in the Washington, D.C. area and I am a frequent visitor to the Vietnam Memorial. I wear Navy hats with military and U.S. Government insignias to honor those that have fallen in all of our conflicts. My conversations with military veterans confirm that they are happy that they survived “hell on earth.” It is this part of Richard’s life that I will remember most. He is a hero to me. He served his country with distinction and honor. We should all take a minute to reflect on the horror of war and the dedication that it takes from our men and women who serve our country. As we approach Veteran’s Day on November 11, don’t forget to hug a Vet because they deserve our respect. I know Richard would smile on you if you did.

God rest Richard's soul. The best(natural) bass player I ever heard. Steve's correct about the awesome collection of music their band could play. The good old days.

My prayers and blessings go out to each of you. I remember the good times when we were so young we all danced for the fiesta in Lamar and the surrounding areas.

Thanks Jeannie. It was a simpler time. My biggest worry was getting to Lamar and having the money for the dance. We all enjoyed the fiesta at the old church. The best part was that no one wanted to leave. Good food,good friends, good times.

Richard was a colorful guy his whole life. As I thought about growing up in Lamar around him, I couldn't help remembering Richard Kimble and the Fugitives-he was a prettty decent musician. Lamar is a place that let's a man be himself, and Richard was his own man.

Rest In Peace Richard, it was an experience knowing you. As one vet to another; Thanks for your service to your country.

Again I am so sorry the hear of Richards, passing. He was a good friend and even though we have not seen or talked to each other in several years, the bond is still there. Alyays, Gene....

Hey eea. Great to know about your service. Be proud, stay proud. I am very pro-military with the Vietnam era. I guess that makes me old school but what the hell. I only know that anyone that servers this country is a hero and it doesn't matter in what capacity. Some see more action than others but the mission is the same. I was assigned to the 10th Group Special Forces out of Ft. Devens, MA. I was part of an A Team and I served with pride. Our motto was: "Many are called, few are chosen." Send Me. I was extremely saddened to hear the news about Richard. I spent a lot of time with him over the years as a fellow musician, drinking buddies and, more than anything, friends.

I have a lot of wonderful memories, that even though he has "moved on," no one will ever be able to take from us.

He will be missed by all of his family and friends, and, although I had not seen him for some time, he has left a large void in my heart, where all of our fond memories remain stored.

Hey Harold. I remember you from the VFW on Sunday afternoons and at the American Legion Hall on Saturday nights. Richard played a different type of Tex-Mex that the "old man" had to adjust to. We all have memories of Richard and his ideas. I loved to see all of you playing Lationo music and it inspired me to pick up my trumpet and be like Pete Hernandez. You are a blast from the past but not forgotten amigo. I know Richard would like us sitting around talking about him. We all have memories of the Noisemakers. Take care amigo.

Hey Stephen-and-Harold (Gerald)??This is good, old friends and now new friends (Vets.), talking about a loved friend. We loved Richard in our own way, and that's great. He would and is proud of us (I hope!).

eea nice to hear from you. I remember when you were a police man in lamar. Nice to see you still keep up with us here. Yes it is sad that Richard is now gone. I just say him at the Road Jam, Jay and the guy down there will miss him as will I. My brother and a lot of guys were in Veitnam and they will always be HEROS to me. Life and times were different then. I miss all of our old friends in Lamar, LHS (64-65). But we too have to move on. Richard will always be in my heart as so many others. Thank you.
