A neophite needs advice. My Arborvite privacy fence is about 20 tall, and is grossly overgrown. The trunks are getting void of branches 2-3 ft. off the ground. I would like to top them off to about 8 ft. high, and aggressively shape them. This would allow sun to penetrate down and promote growth to fill-in the voids. My hopes are to regain privacy.
So, how do I do it? Visions come to mind of using a chain saw like a hedge trimmer, but I don't wish to kill them if that is the wrong approach. Please advise, so my "green thumb effort" doesn't turn into a "black-hand debackle"! Thanks so much. Mick.simax1@verizon.net |

We had our 30 year ols 15' hi 4 ft wide dense arborvitae trimmed...should say they shaved them. OMG they look awful! Please tell me they will fill back in. They are 15' ft high sticks with a little green here and there. Help!

My experience with those things are that they are pretty hardy and will probably come back without a problem.
