'Pro-family' group ready for gay marriage debate

Full story: Warwickonline.com

The debate on legalizing gay marriage has been in the state spotlight in recent weeks, but for Christopher Plante, it's been a priority for more than two years.

HA "pro-family"?? Yeah, pro-family unless that family has adults of the same gender. Then he's very anti-family, as these peopel should be labeled.

What a crock.
With little time before the hearing, NOM Rhode Island is focused on mobilizing their supporters and signing up advocates to testify. Plante noted that weekday evenings are a tough time to get parents to make the trip to the State House, but he is confident many people will share their feelings on the issue. In his opinion, it’s those testimonies of regular Rhode Islanders that matter most.
Why does the testimony of people matter at all? If people go down to the capital and say that they are opposed to same-sex marriage, that somehow makes it okay to deny these families a marriage license?

This will be a repeat of today's circus hearing in the Maryland senate. The only thing the anti-gays had to say was either about procreation or religion. There was audible snickering from some of the comments being made.

I only wish one of the Senators would have asked just one of them to explain just how gays marrying were going to harm straight marriages.

Education. He keeps talking "education." I think better words might be indoctrination, scare tactics, false innuendo, misinformation - the tools of the NOM crowd. Their notion of education will be 30-second spots on TV decrying the demise of America if the homosexuals are allowed to marry. But as we saw in the Prop 8 trial in California, when you examine their "curriculum" in a court of law, it cannot stand up to the light of day.

True education gives people the tools they need to make informed decisions. Their notion of education is to spread their fears about the horrors and evils that will happen if society allows gays to have rights comparable to their own - all totally unfounded.

It's how the legislators pretend they're actually listening to the people. There will be pro & anti sides speaking. Each will have equal time. The anti-gays are so ridiculous in their arguments, it can only HELP our cause.

Their misinformation is losing any effectiveness, especially since there have been same-sex couples marrying for 6 years now in Massachusetts. I would think any negative effects on heterosexual marriages would be obvious by now. Yet the marriage rate for heteros is as high as ever and the divorce rate is LOWER than ever.

I was listening to an interview of some anti-marriage Governor this morning, and he kept repeating, earnestly, and with great conviction, that the best way to ensure that straight couples marry, and stay married, was to deny gay couples their right to marry at all.

Sadly, shouting questions like "Explain WHY!" at him through the car radio was not effective ...

But this information is not getting out, at least not in the 30-second spots that the masses hear and believe...and the people who believe the misinformation in those spots are not the people who are going to read anything longer than a bumper sticker. They keep winning when this comes up for election, because those voting believe their lying, misleading 30-second spots.

Don't you just hate that when it happen.......lol!!!

If any of them can explain how denying a loving Same-Sex Couple the right to marry will cause a heterosexual couple to procreate responsibly......I'd like to hear that!!!

Sad, but they can't.......no more can they explain how denying a Same-Sex Couple will help the divorce rate go down!!!

It's actually worse than them believing the misinformation: It's really all about apathy mixed with a small amount of fear of change. Most people understand the bankruptcy of NOM's arguments and their commercials. That's why these propositions lose in the polls up until election day.

In the privacy of the voting booth, however, people suddenly think "Well, this won't help me. I'm going to vote to keep things the way I've always known them."

We need to give our allies and the uncommitted a reason to vote for change.

Yeah, I got the same response from my computer speakers! I just wanted to grab one of those Maryland Senators and demand they ask that followup question from the likes of Maggie Gallagher.

But maybe they already knew everything the anti-gays were spouting was B.S. so they just allowed them to speak their piece and move on.

I'm sure the hearing today in Rhode Island will be more of the same. Does anyone have a link to a site which will broadcast that hearing?

Which is why we need to do a better job of getting our own 30-second ads out there that DOES have that info. We need to point out the specific claims made by NOM & other groups that the sky would fall in Massachusetts & Vermont & Connecticut & New Hampshire, then put out the actual statistics.

We need to go on the offensive against the anti-gay groups, including the Catholic Church. How does an organization which supported & hid & defended known child molesters have ANY moral standing left with Americans?

Especially since the divorce rate in Massachusetts has gone down SINCE gay couples have been allowed to marry.

Put THAT in an ad.

And what would that reason be?

I agree that this is our biggest problem, but no one seems to have found the answer yet. How do you get those who don't really care one way or the other to actually vote FOR equality, if the equality argument itself isn't enough?

The pro-gay and anti-gay sides will always come out to vote, but that leaves out the VAST MAJORITY of those in the middle. In the prop 8 vote, there were enough people who didn't vote on prop 8 on way or the other but DID vote on the rest of the issues to have swung the vote our way. Why didn't they vote on prop 8? What would it take to convince them to vote?

When we figure out the answer to that question, we'll never lose another vote.

Oh, it’s so cute when teenage hillbillys access the internet for the first time. Does your Mommy know that the word “queer” was the first word you searched?

I'm afraid that fear will always win the sound-bite wars. The only answer I have is to keep talking to friends, neighbors, co-workers, club members, etc. We have to walk right up to the edge of proselytizing. And more of us need to do it.

Make it personal. It's the only way we know that works.
