"Keep in mind, most everyone around us is already at 9 percent." "Everyone else is doing it" is a child's arguement. Why has the cost of running the city gone up? I am amazed how when private individuals have an economic downturn they spend less, yet lowering expenses is never an option for any governmental entity. Perhaps they aren't as concerned since they didn't earn the money in the first place, they only took it, at the point of a gun, from those who did earn it.

Now lets see...Russellville is the only high school in the state with a Jombo Tron at the football stadium oh and wait...that one wasn't large enough so they ordered a larger one and put the smaller one on their brand new $2+million baseball complex. The school looks more like a college complex than a High School and they say they are running low on money and want to increase taxes? Sell the Jumbo trons on e-bay and lets see if that money will get you through one more year.

i think we should raise the taxes so our city schools would be able to help the students and so the teachers wouldn't be laid off even though we have to pay more taxes so our city would be more better.

Thank you!!! I'm glad someone else sees it like that. I also believe that if the city has to make cuts to their budget in order to raise taxes and help the school, then the school should be made to make cuts to their budget. It's not right for city employees to be laid off just because the school is in trouble when it's not the city's fault! As a parent and grandparent as well as an alumni of Russellville Schools, I have to object to an increase in the sales tax. In this horrrible economy we are facing at this time, people can not afford a tax hike. Our school system has become spoiled. How many other schools have the facilities we do( a jumbotron, swimming pool, tennis courts and a 1.5 million dollar field house? Northwest Junior College doesn't even compare with our facilities. What our council and local governments need to do is be aggressive in trying to bring jobs into our area to increase our tax base not bleed the citizens when so many re out of work and are struggling to keeep their utilities on and to buy groceries..

We need jobs not new taxes. The scool system is spoiled. We already have better facilites than some junior colleges do.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't a 1/2 cent sales tax voted on and awarded to the schools back in the late 1980's in Russellville? And, wasn't that same tax taken away from the schools by the city council about 2 or 3 years ago? Seems to me that the city council is THE problem in Russellville. How many tax dollars were spent on "beautification" projects like city lake that NOONE really cared about?? Take away some of these councilmen's pet projects and the schools would have more money without taxing he citizens more.
