Bad dentures prompt consumer complaints

When a particularly hard candy bar cracked her partial denture this past January, Coupeville resident Veronica Murray had no idea just how much her life was about to change.

At the time, she never would have guessed the next three months would turn her life into a medical nightmare. Today, the 67-year-old owns a new set of dentures that don't work, is out $2,200 and is considering filing a civil lawsuit.

But her error wasn't in deciding to eat that candy bar. It was choosing Kevin Kowalski of Oak Harbor Denture Center, a local denturist whose service, according to Murray, is nothing to smile about.

I have been trying to get a refund of our $2,200 dollars after my mother whom suffers from a brain disease decided not to go with dentures afterall. I have made numerous phone calls which non have been returned and even went to speak to Kevin in person. After several months of no luck we are looking to seek a public defender to hear our case. I've had it and am tired of wasting my time, my mother just wants her money back.

Please don't paint all denturists with the same brush. This is an unfortunate, and isolated, incident. In the future, please go to a denturist who is a member in good standing of the Washington Denturist Association. Visit their website at www.wadenturist.com

My mom recently had dentures made because her old ones (over 20 years old)no longer fit her mouth and had turned very yellow. Everything seemed fine with her medicare paid for new dentures until she got them. They don't fit her mouth at all-her face sinks in and it appears to look like she has no teeth, making her look extremely old. Also, they made the bottom teeth really long and the uppers are very short-all you see if were to smile is the bottom teeth. The Dentist says it's her fault and that she should have told him during her fitting that they didn't look right (my mom is very shy and timid) I say it's the Dentist fault for not seeing it himself. Medicare won't pay for a new set. The Dentist told her it would cost her about $2000.00 for new ones. My Mom won't even wear the new ones because they look so awful. Is there anything that can be done? Did she get cheap dentures because they were paid for by medicare?

This is most unfortunate situation. Please do not be put off denturists by one bad example. Unfortunately one gets bad eggs in all professions. In this case it happens to be denturist, but it could just as easily have been an inexperienced dentist with almost no training in denture construction. the bottom line: One go to someone highly recommended with a reputation of excellence. Generally denturists are the experts because they see only denture patients all the time and are the denture specialists

The washington denturist assn just raised the licensing fee's to be a denturist. The reason was because of all the complaints they had to pay for the extra investigators. This is because the denturist did not receive the education they promised the voters when they voted for I-607. Even students that went to Bates Tech. school and were licensed sued the school and Dept. of Health because they could not sucessfully do the job. See Anderson v Dept of health. Pierce county (Tacoma) around 2000 or 1999. Its to bad the media will not do the real story on how the denturist program in Washington is being exploited because of the action of a few dishonest people who ran I-607 and how the Dept of Health employees at the direction of the Dental assn. is ruining a very viable and needed health care service. And how the whistleblowers were prosecuted to shut them up. Don't get rid of the denturist in Washington, just get rid of the people behind the corruption.
