The best of Northwest

As one of 18,000 Northwest employees living here in the North Star state, I ask that my fellow Minnesotans try to be a little more sensitive to our feelings when you bash, insult or berate Northwest Airlines.

Nathan Huntley: While I agree with your ethanol rant, can you show that the ethanol people and the water usage people of Woodbury are the same people?

Barbara Bircha: I received 10 pints of Memorial Blood transfusions. There's a chance that I have "Northwest blood" in me. I'm proud of that and proud of the work you've all done. I think when most people bash Northwest, a lot of the frustration is concentrated on the top (management) and not so much to the workers yourselves.

Bob Beskar-you are right on! Taxpayer and flyer loyalty has kept Northwest afloat for a long time. "Give them an inch..."

G. Harold Schroepfer: I appreciate your rant but I fail to see the connection. Don't you want people to pay their fair share of taxes so our collective taxes don't go up? None of this has to do with personal privacy (because these people have ALREADY committed a crime, and has nothing to do with terrorists).

Hopefully we will come to our senses regarding ethanol, the product would not be profitable without subsidies. Just another government lead boondogle.

Ethanol, depreciation, oil depletion allowance, etc. are all BS. Subsidies just postpone the inevitable; either your business is viable and profitable or get out. We should have let the lousy businesses that that were going under go. Remember Enron, businesses swept up all the good parts of Enron and life continued on. Maybe big business should adhere to capitalist principles, we'd all be better off.

In all this airline merger mess I have not seen anyone mention why exactly it is that the new airline would benefit from being based in Atlanta. I don't see any reason why the merger wpoldn't wprk just as well with headquarters in Minnesota. The top dogs have come around to say the work will stay here so what is the problem with the headquarters staying right where it is?

Thanks!!(:

I propose we do away with all ethanol and gasoline subsidies. It's high time we pay the REAL price of these goods. Both of them.

Mellers

The Woodbury water police are worried about the costs associated with drilling new wells. Ethanol proponents are NOT worried about the cost of subsidies, mandates, general inflation of food in general due to distortion of the commodity markets, and finally, the dropping water table. I'd say they are two different groups.

But my $0.02
I think when Mr. Huntley identified hand-wringers and conservation types, he wasn't talking about Woodbury officials, who obviously have no influence over ethanol policy. he's talking about the types water zealots who chastised the Woodbury resident in general.

Thanks for setting me straight on this-it makes sense, now! I don't always get the obvious stuff.

I'd definitely worry much more about the water used by ethanol plants than those used by a small number of residents (unless 5-10 residents equals the amount of water used by one ethanol plant!). However, aquifers may be unique and isolated, and I don't know the aquifers of Woodbury-does anyone else? Could there be a real concern? I know that a lot of people would be mad if the groundwater under Woodbury dried up...

What crime have we identified here?

I thought the letter writer was comparing listening in on private conversations with prying into private bank accounts and why wouldn't those who are so adamant about prying into conversations be just as adamant about prying into private bank accounts. No convicted criminals are indentified in either case.

Barbara Bicha, I appreciate your comments, and hope you'll understand that while I have done my share of NWA bashing, it's never been aimed at the employees. Instead it's been directed at management. It's similar to the way I feel about Iraq. The troops have my thanks, support, and respect. The management, i.e the President and his cronies, my disdain.

Hopefully, this merger,(takeover) doesn't impact your life too negatively.

I believe it's against the law to not pay one's taxes. The difference here is it is known that they haven't paid their share and are dodging the law (my presumption on the last one) where wiretapper situations is a guess, to see if someone's done something wrong.

You are right about the lack of conviction, and I can't (quickly) figure out a rebuttal on that one. If someone doesn't pay taxes and won't respond to the IRS/MN Revenue, is that a self-conviction?

I still think the difference is between a known tax evasion versus a presumed "interesting call for the sake of the nation."

I suspect we’re on different wave lengths here, Mellers. I thought that the letter writer was suggesting that the Minnesota Department of Revenue would have bank officials monitor all accounts on an on-going basis and if bank officials noticed unusual activity, the bank would pass the depositors record and social security number on to the state so that the Revenuers could check the depositors tax form to see if there is reason to be suspicious.

In other words, let’s suppose you regularly deposit your paycheck in your bank and a deposit pattern is established. Now let’s suppose that when a parent passes away you deposit the sizable inheritance in your bank. A blip goes up on the bank’s radar that Meller’s account has an unusually high deposit. The bank forwards this information, along with your social security number, to the state revenue department. Your information is now on the Revenuer’s radar so that when your tax return arrives, it’s going to get extra scrutiny. You may also draw attention from the Revenuers if they discover you have deposits in more than one bank.

You sound as if you're coming from a position where the tax department is gathering evidance against a known tax dodger or has reason to believe a tax payer may be a tax dodger and they are looking for evidence.

Oh, that is a big difference. I must have read it wrong (I'll assume you're right!). Then yes, I do not support the "monitoring" of bank information. Yes, I am only in support of going after tax dodgers. Thank you for clarifying.

Sounds like bitterness. We're still around. I may hate management, but the folks I work with have been outstanding, in spite of our oppressive regime and poor work rules.

Barbara, I have been treated poorly so many times be NWA employees that I don't care that Northwest bashing hurts your feelings. Once while sitting on a place I observed a baggage handler purposely drop a cardbox box off the conveyer into a few inches of slushly snow on the tarmack where it sat for at least 15 minutes. I mentioned this to the flight attendant who said she could not do anything about it. Another time after waiting at the gate 10 hours for a flight delayed by mechanical issues I had dozed off. When I awoke, I noticed my flight was no longer listed. I ran up and asked the gate agent about it and was told my flight had left 10 minutes ago from another gate. Don't you think a gate agent could check on someone sleeping when there is a long delay. I am very happy to see Northworst gone. Perhaps maybe we can get some competition with airlines like Southwest and other discount airlines after the Northwest dominance is gone. I commend you for your volunteer work, but Northwest employees are not the only ones who do this.

Note to all gate agents! Aside from usually working the gates by yourself YOU MUST NOW SEARCH THE GATE AREA AND LOOK FOR SLEEPING PASSENGERS! THEY ARE NO LONGER TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS!

The flying public is so out of touch with reality. It's sad that they act out on such unreasonable expectations and then attempt to justify lashing out at airline employees....

ATTENTION ALL FLIGHT ATTENDANTS! IN ADDITION TO PERFORMING SAFETY RELATED DUTIES, GREETING PASSENGERS, PRE DEPARTURE BEVERAGES, HANGING COATS, HANDING OUT BLANKETS AND ASSISTING WITH LUGGAGE SPACE AND THOSE WHO NEED SPECIAL ASSISTANCE YOU ARE NOW TO MONITOR THE CABIN FOR CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS REGARDING MIS-HANDLED LUGGAGE. YOU ARE TO IMMEDIATELY TO ARM YOUR DOOOR, POP YOUR SLIDE AND REPORT THE INCIDENT TO A RAMP SUPERVISOR! THE PASSENGER IS NOT TO BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO WRITE A LETTER OR MAKE A CALL CONCERNING THE INCIDENT. THAT IS ALL...
