While I have to concede that Selena was a very talented singer, every year I find myself wondering when we're going to move on - as a city - and stop making such a big deal around the anniversary of her death? Corpus was, and is, home to a lot of famous people - Farrah Fawcett, Eva Longoria, Terrence McNally, Pepe Serna, Todd Oldham, the Labontes - why don't we make the same big deal about them?

Which one of them have passed away yet? If they're truly famous and affected the masses in some way, then they'll be mourned and remembered at each anniversary of their passing. Selena was a special person to many and will always be remembered for her talent, generosity and the kindness she showed everyone. Her death was a tragedy indeed but obviously God had other plans for her. There's no harm in remembering something or someone on an anniversary. What is the harm in doing so one day out of 365?

I'm not trying to take anything away from her, believe me. But to be fair, it's not just one day a year. I mean, there's a statue of her downtown. And, let's not forget the "Selena Auditorium" named for her. My personal gripe is that I bet more kids in Corpus, or all of South Texas for that matter, know more about her than they do people like Dr. Hector Garcia.

Perhaps you should write your congressman since you're so passionate on the subject. You'd have better luck bringing to the forefront your feelings on who you deem should be recognized for leaving a stamp on Texas history. Good luck!

I agree, selena is so 1990? She's dead, what did she change about the city, what did she contribute, besides tejano music? I don't see no history about her as we see about MLK, Babe Ruth, etc... I moved to CC 2 yrs ago, and I'm Hispanic but far from crazy about her death. When Eva Longoria, passes, are we going to make a monument too and name it in her honor? She just makes movies and in some sitcom I guess, I just know she married Parker and is up on Mario Lopez in all the pics. Oh lets do the statue of her with an apple? Is that with the housewives show? Tax payers money for a damn statue to "worship". Just build a Buddha, and ask for health and wealth instead :)

"Selena was no saint... just a singer. " Amen....why should we mourn her more than anyone ? God does not discriminate on how many records you sold or how your music did on the charts. Why should we ?

If they want to continue paying tribute to her, then that's their deal. She was indeed the Queen of Tejano, as she's known as. She was popular even while she was alive, yes it's been like what, 14 years? She will continue to be recognized, I really don't know anyone back home who didn't like her. Not saying everyone loved her, but I haven't met someone who hasn't.
