Leatherhead, I don't understand. I thought there was 16 Firefighters per shift? Am I wrong? And 14 is the minimal staffing per shift isn't it? Thus Central- 1 Battalion chief, 1 Station caption, 2/ medic unit and 4 for the Engine. Sta 2= 1 Sta Lt, and 3 FF's. and Sta 3=1 Sta Lt and 1 FF.(all total 14) And as you stated 2 that can be off to cover vacation, sick leave, training and other stuff. Is this not correct? I know this info is old so I might be wrong. Thanks.

We have a minimum staffing of 15 not 14 like I had originally stated. We have been working with 14 for so long that I had forgotten about the other slot. All other staffing is just as I had stated. We do not run a 4 person engine at Sta. #1. There are normally 12 people on duty every day. 6 at Sta #1, 4 and Sta #2, and 2 and Sta #3 with 2 slots filled for vacation. That's 14 total. The other slot which would make 15 is either not filled due to employment opening or when it is filled it used an 3rd slot for vacations to allow 3 people off instead of having a 3 person engine at Sta #2.

if there was a volenteer program that allowed volenteers at all stations, they would have a better time manning them

Follow the link above and you can see that there is a volunteer program. Also as you will see the posting has been up since July 2008.

I am sure that you will put in an application for them too? My guess is that if the response was overwhelming that the posting may have been retired quite some time ago. But since the post is still up then maybe no one really wants to volunteer?? You be the judge. Wonder how many people volunteer to do your job.

Volunteer, means just that. The show up at their leisure and pleasure. They are not getting paid. So they cant be counted on or for staffing needs. They are a bonus.

True, very true. Volunteers are an important element of our society and they do help out. But you are so very correct in that they cannot be counted upon. HHHhhhmmmmm, I wonder what things would be like if we had a volunteer Police Force, or a volunteer garbage department or a volunteer sewer department??? ETC etc.
