Today I tried to E-Mail Code Enforcement, LT Austin in the Police Dept and the Assistant City Manager. All the E-Mails came back something to do with domain. This is one of the messages.
To: cforester@copperas-cove.tx.us
Subject: Boards and Brush in the Street Right of Way
Date: Jul 2, 2008 4:24 PM
I don't know who's job it is but, I have sent an e-Mail to code enforcement
three weeks ago reference fence boards in the street and the occupant or the City
has not taken action. These boards have been there over six weeks now.
The location is on Lynn Lane between Phyllis and Pleasant Lane. The people at
the House on the corner of Phyllis and Lynn Lane placed them there. I believe the
address is 1612 Phylis Lane.
Being that they (the boards) are in the road right of way, I'm asking the
Police department to see what you can do.
The city won't pick them up because brush is mixed with them.

There is a good chance that the E-Mails didn't go through as I tried to send
this one to Lt Austin but I noticed it came back to me.

Thank You

Is the City server down?

The email address for city employees ends with @ci.copperas-cove.tx.us

If you send it to cforester@ci.copperas-cove.tx. us it will work.

Look here for most city email addresses:

It looks like most of the email addresses on the above link are correct but some are missing the ci part before Copperas. Maybe Mr. Peterson or Mr. Clayton can get it fixed.

Code enforcement is part of the Fire Department right now, pick up the phone and call them.

Contacting code enforcement may not help. I've complained several times a year, for years, about the property just south of Nauert's Auto Parts. They have cleaned that property, but the roof on one building collapsed years ago and needs to be torn down. There is another out building that is in bad condition and the front door is swinging in the wind inviting vandals and the homeless. I bet one of those SIG type people own that property and are untouchable by the City.

This is one of the properties that Willie Goode talked about when he said some houses should be torn down. All that got him was a nice letter signed by Jimmy Clark bashing him.

I must have missed that controversy.

IMO the City should red tag those structures, have them secured, and start the process so they can be demolished.

How much do you want the City to budget for the removal of these structures?

You bill the owner of the property. If they won't pay then put a lien on it.

Everyday you prove why you should not be a City Councilman.

If the property owner refuses to repair or remove a dangerous structure then the City should remove it and put a lien on the property. I bet the City would love to own that property next to Nauert Auto Parts.

Since this is Code Enforcement month we will all see how our City Staff tangles with this problem.

Good boy. Put it back to the citizen. Maybe the dumb citizen doesn't know about property liens and penalities.

IMO and what I know. The city can put all the liens on a persons property they want but legal proceedings to take the property cost money. The property could also have school taxes, county taxes and possibly mowing liens. Who ever initiates the action will pay to have it done. Some property many have a higher value if it is on 190 but most that would be condemned would not break even selling it to the highest bidder. The number one priority is it a health hazard and how many are people live around it? We need to do something but again how much do you want to spend? If you don't believe me please go to someone qualified to answer this question and ask them.

Ok, Mr Clayton, who would be qualified to answer the question? <snark, snark>
Actually, there is not one entity that would be qualified to answer the question. First, the code enforcement office/ city engineer could tell you about the costs to remove the offending structure. The county tax office would have to tell you the appraised value and how much is owed in delinquent taxes, they might also have information about liens against the property.
There may be more, but this is a good start.

I guess Mr. Clayton supports dangerous buildings in the Cove.

Funny thing is that when a former Council Man had a dangerous building right across the street from City Hall they made him tear it down.

I bet there are other ways to get rid of dilapidated buildings with out costing the city money. I wonder how much has ever been budgeted for this purpose? Maybe some of those builders should demolish a building to build one. I think that is a great idea.
