That school has big problems. Maybe they need to tighten up their admission requirements. For example, they should have expelled Cott the drug dealer immediately. Instead he is celebrated on campus like some kind of hero. That's indicative of the losers among their student body. I have a Grand Valley sweatshirt but I'm ashamed to wear it.

why is this college having so many problems?? do they not care who gets in or what? having all this stuff happen to the college gives it a bad name and parents will probably discourage their kids from going there

Apparently you guys didn't actually read the article. The woman wasn't even a GVSU student, and they retracted the part about it happening at LMH, and said it happened at an apt. Hence, why OCSD is now handling the case.

There are 22,000 students and approximately 2,000
professors and staff members at GVSU. They have a security staff and are patrolled by their own officers, who are are a division of OCPD. One cannot expect there will not be some crimes committed with this many people milling about.
Be reasonable, look at GVSU's crime statistics and compare them with other Universities across the nation before you judge them so harshly. It would be extremely unjust to expel any student who has not yet been convicted of any crime. I, too, have GVSU sweat(s) and I am proud to wear them. One more point, their enrollment requirements must meet state standards in order to receive state funding necessary to run this institution. Expand your thinking a bit.

GVSU's admissions requirements are now higher than MSU's.

I am a proud grad of GVSU. "Itsalljustaride" is correct, their requirements for education are VERY strict. Admissions are now so difficult I am not sure I would get in now. I graduated high school with a 3.5 and that might not be good enough. Whenever you get thousands of people in a compact area there are bound to be issues.

But yet when OCSD does thier job and police's the off campus houseing people get all up in arms.......I for one am not a fan of GVSU, I am more proud to say I attended GRCC than GVSU, as I did attend both.
As far as law enforcement goes there, I say keep up the great work OCSD and GVSU PD. Oh and by the way skeptical, GVSU's PD is not a division of OCSD, they are their own entity. Only thing in common is they assist each other on GVSU related call, on and off campus.

Why does this headline say GVSU slashing was a domestic dispute ...
and then there's nothing in the article about a domestic dispute and reportedly it didn't happen at GVSU, nor was the victim a student?

WOOD TV's website news is pretty awful but seems worse than ever lately.

All Grand Valley State University Department of Public Safety Services officers are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. Public Safety officers have full law enforcement authority and responsibilities. They work closely with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, and other law enforcement agencies.

Grand Valley employs a fully-equipped and trained university police department, providing 24-hour police services and assistance. The Department of Public Safety Services maintains a non-emergency dispatch service and office hours on the Allendale campus and relies on 24-hour emergency service from the Ottawa County Central Dispatch Authority.

They just want to sensationalize what has happend at GVSU lately. This story is not a story at all, and shouldn't even be in the news. They just picked it up to dramatize and try to make GVSU look bad. Apparently, it is working, looking at the comments above me. Surely this was probably just a petty thing. "Slashing," what a ridiculous headline for an article. But then again, it makes people look, doesn't it?? WOODTV is getting as bad as ET and "Extra"! Needless to say, I have switched over to WZZM, so I don't have to hear all of this BS and hype. It's too bad, because WOOD used to be my only source of news.

Well good for you. Go right ahead and be more proud of the fact that you attended GRCC! Maybe they can take the credit for your deplorable grammar and spelling!

I am an alumnis of GVSU and I agree with you. A majority of the problem is that WOODTV and all the other TABLOID tv stations pounce on this kind of stuff and hype and dramatize it to death for ratings. Guess that speaks volumns as to their viewership, all going to cable!!

I agree with you for the most part. Crime and crime prvention is a big issue on any campus. No campus is really very safe.

As far a GVSU, I am beginning to think something in is the water over there, bad karma, or something. Maybe it is as simple as Wood needing something to put in the news, so we are seeing more of it reported.

Either way, blamming the University without a clear understanding of the core problem is really not fair.

GVSU has had an inordinately bad year, that's true, but it needs to be put into perspective. Most of the stuff that happened wasn't even crime related, but rather personal tragedies that unfortunately happen every now and then no matter where you are. For example the girl who died recently and the young couple who died this past winter from asphyxiation when they left the camp stove burning in the car they were sleeping in. The only "big" news that has been crime related was the Copp shooting and this incident that appears to be mostly unrelated to GVSU, but I think it's all getting conflated into one issue, unfortunately. This school is usually really tame compared to most college campuses.

Most likely alcohol related as are most violent crimes! Nexttime any of you hear of a pothead assulting someone or going on some type of rampage let me know ok. Best of luck finding such a story. Pot head kills another driver while driving high. Let me know if you find one of thoses also! I think cops should wait right outside bars and give everyone a breathalizer who leaves the bar, drinking isnt against the law but drinking and driving is. I bet 90% of the people who drive after the bar are drunk! We dont care about them tho do we?!

Compared to MSU or UM GVSU's campus is a very placid place by comparison, its statistics are somewhere around Calvin or Hope. You can look up their crime statistics on there websites they are required to report them every year under the Clery Act.

No one would say OCSD is gooding a GOOD job!!! The detective department is way below par. Sorry but when the shoe fits, wear it. The GVSU PD is a lot better and more professional compared to the OCSD.
OCSD is a joke and it is well known all over the state now. Thanks to the rotten detectives in the unit-at least the ones who are too lazy to actually do their job!!! Thanks BN-you are a joke and everyone knows it!!!

From the sounds of this post, and others past, you have a bone to pick with ONE Det. Oh but I know, its the whole departments fault.....duh how slow of me. There is only one joke out here and it is you. You ungrateful unwanted POS. If you don't like the services don't ask for them. Your complaint was more than likely a BS one anyway, as well as you are someone who is never happy.
Unlike you I am grateful for the services they offer, and no just to calm any rumors I don't have "ties" with anyone there, just grateful for the job they do.

The atmosphere in the office is stressful. Learn to divide time in a planned and phased manner. Beware of starting a lot of new things but not having the time to finish any of them. Mental overload will burn your busy and chaotic schedules and health problems may crop up all of a sudden. If you party with friends this evening, don't make it too late.
