You wouldn't be talking about Blanton and the pardons scandal would you? I remember when Lawrence was killed. I know someone who was suppose to die, during this time, in Chattanooga... "they" broke his arms, legs, played tic-tac-toe in his head, then set his house on fire. You won't find anything about it in the news, but his mother was under protection for years. Bomb threats and this same person, His dad's bar blew up supposedly from a gas leak. This person after he got out of the hospital went to prison, because he refused to testify after that. His cousin served time in GA too. They were stealing to "pay, to keep from going to prison" thru this Blanton thing. been around a long time wrote: What about when Lawrence Verble was murdered outside his club, shortly after he had provided evidence about Ray Blanton and all the dirty dealings that were going on there? That one is still unsolved, isn't it?

They tried awfully hard, put up huge rewards because they believed that Lawrence Verble was killed because he had gone against the Blanton people. But never came up with anything, had anyone tell them anything. Yes, and wasn't it interesting that the people who were after these people you talk about were not from the crooked Blanton administration, but from the crooked group that came after him. And they were just as crooked, just not as "Blatant" as good ol' Ray Blatant, as we used to call him.

I was doing some searching earlier, It's quite interesting that you can only find bits and pieces of information. Some of the same people, 2 more were killed and another person who was on trial in North GA...tried to get one of the "dead" man's testimony thrown out. The man that died was Bernard Weithal and he wouldn't testify period, no statement until Tommy Prater was in jail, because he knew Tommy would kill him. Once in jail he gave his testimony but never made it to the actual trial. They still found Prater guilty of armed robbery.... So much corruption, when you start to dig.

There was one more person, Kevin McCormack, that had boxes and boxes of proof, evidence against Eddie Sisk and William "Bill" Thompson, was strangled with his own belt and all that evidence that Marie ( chairman of the parole board) gathered and he kept for her, was gone. Never to be found, and from what I can tell his murdered was never solved. The Blanton thing traveled everywhere.

They go by the charge from what ive been told, im certain if one attempts escape that would obviously place them in higher security. One must be over 150 lbs and a certain age to go to a maximum security faciltiy....i mean i can do some of this in my head it doesnt take five years to figure it out.

I remember wrote: Michael Bush killed a young man named Richard Dow in 1989. Richard was working at Red Food Grocery Store (where Staples is now) and was collecting shopping carts in the parking lot and Bush kidnapped and murdered Dow for absolutely no reason (other than Bush was crazy). It was VERY sad, especially because Richard was so young-he was only 17 at the time I believe. I have never forgotten this and have often thought of the Dow family and cannot for one second imagine what they went through. Bush himself was still pretty young from what I can recall. I went to school with Richard he was only 17 Bush was 24 when it happen

Without a doubt, the Tommy Burks case has to be the most famous one. I don't know if others have made it to the history channel. It was an interesting case. The fact that the death penalty was not in play could be for some interesting reasons. The late state senator Tommy Burks family are in political positions even today. The DA who prosecuted the case is the infamous Bill Gibson. He has surfaced as the director of Power of Putnam and received a million dollar grant for the organization - check it out. The attorney who assisted or co-represented Bill Gibson when he lost his law license is Shawn Fry.

Old Man Two wrote: <quoted text>What about this murder? Were there any suspects? Was there ever any motive discovered? Money taken or anything like that? Was he involved in any sort of an investigation? When did this happen? Who discovered the body? etc? I was a teenager when he got killed, Blanton was TN Gov., shortly after he got out of office, there was a movie made about him and his dealings and everybody in Overton County watched, and wondered who would play Lawrence. I don't think it was ever solved or maybe it was swept under the rug. It was talked about a great deal, and it was shush shush at the same time. And it was in the 70's.

A portion of the story of the pardons scandal was made into a book, Marie: A True Story by Peter Maas, author of Serpico, and eventually made into the motion picture Marie starring Sissy Spacek in the title role of Board of Pardons and Paroles Board head Marie Ragghianti. Attorney and future U.S. Senator Fred Thompson launched his acting career in this picture, portraying himself (he was Ragghianti's lawyer). The pardons scandal, as well as others, are also detailed in the book FBI Codename TENNPAR, written by Hank Hillin, the Nashville-based FBI agent who led the investigation into the Blanton administration.
