I have served my time in the Millitary hournorably, and while i was in like many others i came home on leave.Every time i would come back all of my friends and or class mates still had no direction or drive.Being in makes you grow up it makes you want to continue to better yourself. That's a good reason to open the draft.

I think everyone should be required to serve at least one enlistment. 2 years minimum

completely disagree. i have a lot of respect for the men and women who choose to serve, but it really isn't for everyone. forcing people to serve is asking for disaster and chaos. particularly when a lot of people out there don't agree with the war in the first place.

If you have seen what kind of change the millitary can bring.People today lack a certian disapline.Pride is so few and far between.and so many young people are so close-minded to the thought of Joining.Take Connersville for example. When you graduate high school and are not going to colloge your left with the option of getting a job (if you can get one).and starting form nothing or open your mind and risk takeing experince. To get a better start and get out of this town before you settle into a min wage job and live in turtle creek

fortunately i don't need the military to give me discipline and direction. but i do agree that it is a really positive option for SOME... not all. that's why i disagree with a draft.

I think that the draft should be reinstated. With all of the jail over crowding, why don't the judges sentence offenders to serve in the military? Maybe that would straighten some of these people out.

Sure. Bring back the draft. Look at how well it worked during Vietnam.

Verteran, I get what you're saying, I really do. Yesterday, I sat in the Marion County court as I have been following a young ladies case for the last two years, and I could not believe all the young men who were incarerated. One young man was only 17 years old. Most likely this young man will get 80 years in prision for being a dumb arse. He was setting at a table with other young men his age (high scool kids) and on a dare took out a firearm and waved it in a employees face at a restaurant. It's truly sad to know that carrying weapons has become a way of life for a large percent of these kids. For some cases like this give this kid a choice, serve your country or go to prision for the rest of your life. Not that it excuses what he did, but he's young enough to be rehabilitated if taken out of his inviorment.

It just breaks my heart to see some of these kids being ticking time bombs. They just haven't got a clue.

That being said, I'm not in favor of the draft. I don't think it's for everyone.

Don't you think that the military would serve the 17 year old well? Better than years in prison

the purpose of a draft is to fill needs in the military, not social engineering

The simple fact of the matter is this: If they are punks on the outside there is a better than 99% chance they will be punks in the service as well.
I was in during a time when what has been proposed here - military service in lieu of jail - was fairly common. If the "crime" was a minor one committed by a first time offender then it was possible that hitch in the military might actually turn the offender on the right path. However, if the individual had a long history of a “screw the rules” attitude it was unlikely he/she was going to change. I’m sure someone will chime in and say “If the crime was serious the service wouldn’t take them.” LOL. If the recruiter's quota was falling short in any given month there were ways of getting around little technicalities that might stand in the way of someone enlisting. I can think of a couple of individuals I knew who, by the rules, should not have been allowed to enlist. The Group W Bench types.
For a while, I had a roommate who had actually done a few years in Leavenworth for a crime he committed when already in the military. Rather than discharge him after his sentence had been served, the Air Force, in its great wisdom, decided to have him serve the remainder of his enlistment. That decision cost me a lot of money at a time when I wasn’t making much to start with because he stole me blind. Neither the service or prison seemed to have helped him along the path of becoming a productive citizen.
I am a veteran totally opposed to reinstating the draft. History has proven that when our country is attacked recruiters can fill their quotas almost without leaving the office. In addition, the military is always “hiring”. There will always be those who enlist just to have an income. There is no reason to have a law in place that might uproot somebody who DOES have a future in the real world just because someone else thinks it would be “good” for them.
