Harold Steele and his boy were trying to take over the jail so they could be on CNN again.

Excellent+ Depty Dog.
A true Topix classic! June 6 (and 7), 1992, a 17-hour period I'll never forget. What an ordeal. ... kh ----------

Yeah, Media, that was a hoot.

I was told it was 2 brothers the center of the fight? Could we be so lucky that it was either the Lawrence brothers--Shane & Shawn? Or the Ervin brothers--Ike & JD? No, we weren't that lucky, no fatalities.

i heard on the c'ville raido news, the brothers somehow made home made wine in THEIR CELL GOT DRUNK and began to fight, the male jail officers tried to break it up and got hurt. just telling what was on the raido

That was told on the radio and sad but it is true.. The home made wine happens more often then you think. It was a set of brother's, Im sure today they are sure regretting what they have done, assault on a jail employee will only multiply there time.
Hope they employees are doing well. |

If the inmates have enough time to brew and distill their own liquor, something is definitely wrong with the Sheriff's department!
Put those 'criminals' out in the hot sun and help clean this friggin' town up instead of letting them lay around in air-conditioning, drinking gawddammed Mai-Tai's!! And, somebody get Barney down there, dammit! |
|
If it was the lawrence boys they'll just snitch on someone and get out of all charges.

1 I've worked, drank, done drugs, smoked, cussed and probably done your ol' lady, azzhole! I've been in your stinking jail. If I'm gonna do something bad, it ain't gonna be on a dammed computer. Even Bubba don't want anything to do with me, Sis! Anything else? |

I think everyone needs to stop and think instead of poking fun of the past.you people dont even realize the seriousness of this situation. Two officers were hurt doing ther job that everyone knows they are underpaid to do.Fayette County Jail is a DOC holding facility which in turn makes it no different than PRISON ! And this situation could happen at any time and be much worse. How many of you would walk into a cell block full of felons? so maybe you should stop and think of the officers and there familys.these people deal with the scumbags of the earth on a daily basis and i know someones gonna say well quit if you dont like it.well what people should do is make sure this department gets what it needs like funding for safety equipment, riot gear, more staff, or maybe bringing the wages up to state levels

I bet the big Bobby Revalee was first on the scene. HA HA
Knowing him he was probably bringing up the rear hiding behind the jail officers. |

OK newsjunkie, Observer and Zach 88. For my forum friends, I'll try to recap the historic event as briefly as possible.
Right at 11 p.m. on June 6,'92, Gloria Diehlman, who lived caddycorner from the jail at 4th and Western. "Something big is goin' on at the jail. I can see all the cops. Get down there." (Paraphrasing, but very close to the message she left.) Maybe 45 seconds later, she leaves another message. "Pick up or get down there 'cuz something serious is going on." Another call from someone else (I can't remember whom) said basically the same thing. By the time Gloria was leaving a third message, I was on my sidewalk heading toward my car. Upon arrival, CPD's Mark Logan (a really good guy, in my opinion) escorts me to Harold S. and loudly declares: "The media would like to know what's going on here, Harold." It was a smack in his face, but funny to me. I 'set up shop' on the back stairs on the south side of the courthouse. As the night went on, I was able to talk to Steele, Claude Trent and others. About 90 minutes before deadline, Bob and Beth Powers got me one of the News-Ex's portable computers and I wrote the story for Saturday's paper on the courthouse steps. And I'm proud to say I won first place in "Deadline News Reporting" from The Associated Press, which was sweet since that wasn't a contest featuring papers with a circulation of 10,000 but also included papers with circulations of either 25,000 to 30,000. Saturday dragged on at a snail's pace, with little info coming out. The only mystery was when Corn and Purcell would surrender, which occurred somehere around 3 or 3:30 p.m., I think. I saw the police take one of them down really hard and got a picture of it but everything was happening so fast the picture was blurry and not worthy of printing. I remember at least one state cop who helped surround the jail making funny and smart-a$$ remarks that afternoon, aimed toward Harold. I remember laughing out loud a couple of times. I also remember having to testify during the trial after one of the defendant's lawyers caught wind of some things Judge Pflum said to myself and former N-Ex reporter Mike Ringlespaugh (RIP, Mike) that Saturday afternoon. I testified: "Pflum told us they were both from trashy families and had really buried themselves with what they'd done," something along those lines. Mike testified, too. In court, the judge said: "I don't recall saying anything like that. Motion for change of judge denied." (Or something very close.) Well, I've burned up everyone's ears long enough. That's my condensed version of the situation that helped make Connersville famous with its repeated footage on CNN, and basically every other television in the United States. ... kh ----------
