I remember Dr. Sanders, didn't know much about all the activity going on, but had heard rumors. It's interesting about the tunnel, that's the first I've heard of that.

I know, the tunnel was what really interested me in her story. Don't know why it was supposedly there but she said that is how the two teens secretly met. So she said that the housekeeper commited suicide in the maids room and the teen in their bedroom. Still don't know all the details but I will ask my friend when I talk to her if she remembers anything else. Mostly she just said there were a lot of drug parties going on at the Sanders place. And yes i am way to young to remember the Sanders. He was the Doctor who delivered me but that's as close as I ever got to knowing him personally.

I am friends with Jayne's daughter who lives in Richmond. This is the story I got from her about the Sanders and Fruth houses. She told me this when her mom put the house up for sale and it made me curious if it really happened. This is what her mom told her. She said there was a tunnel under 16th street that connected the two houses. She said the housekeeper in the Fruth house commited suicide and so did one of the children who lived there as a teen. And something about that teen being in love with a Sanders teen being the reason. This is just what I was told and it's been awhile so I may not be acurate on the details. There was a giant safe in that house too.
What are tha addresses for these two homes ?

Rowena Rosendale Fruth was my mother's cousin. She took some wonderful photographs of my grandfather, Arthur Rosendale, which I have and value. Her father, my grandfather's brother, Dr. T. T. Rosendale was a physician in Fostoria, Ohio where Rowena grew up. Rowena had two children, Rodney and Judith. Judith was married to Dr. Sanders and they had a daughter, Rowena, who at last notice was living in the family summer home in Michigan.

I am looking for a Dr. Saunders? Used to live in Connersiville in the 40's or 50's. Possibly went to prison?

But in searching for him I saw this post... in the 1930 Census Rowena Fruth shows married to a Dr. Virgil Fruth and was a pianist and teacher. 1603 Virginia Ave. Connersiville. Her father was from OHIO and mother from West Vir. Daughter Judith and son Rodney. Hope that helps!

I was friends with Rowena Sanders when we were around Jr High age (65-67) I spend a lot of time at their house, even went on vacation to Michigan with them. Her Grandmother Rowena Fruth lived across the street - met her a couple of times. All very nice people. I remember they had a full soda shop counter in their basement. We were all over that house and I never saw a tunnel between the two houses! They had a pool which probably the first private pool I had ever seen. It's funny, I was just thinking about her for some strange reason and googled "rowena sanders" and found this site. I remember she went away to school somewhere during High School. I remember hearing that her brother died and older sister Diane died - not sure about Karen. If you're out there I'v enjoy hearing from you Rowena!

I am one of the twins that Rowena Fruth photographed extensively during 1940-1941. My mother was from Connersville. Mrs. Fruth recognized my sister and me as photographic models on Mother's trips "home" during the summers.(We were living in Minnesota.) She won several prizes with our photos; one is in the Smithsonian and one in MOMA. They also appeared in Modern Photography and National Geographic (June 1941) magazines.

About Rowena Fruth, She lived in a stately home on Virginia ave.. Her husband was a doctor, she had 2 children, Judith and Rodney. My understanding, Judith committed suicide. In the 20s and 30s she taught piano
and also was a local photographer. I have several from my family. The family had a maid named Alma who
was with Mrs. Fruth until her demise.I remember her large living room with 2 grand pianos. Her grand daughter was Rowena(Ro) who died of a drug overdose.

I always thought the Fruth/Sanders story would make a wonderful movie. Such talented people, but obviously they didn't know how to use their knowledge in a positive manner. It's interesting that people in Connersville are still intrigued by these families in 2013.
