1 I think that anybody on the town board with a relationship to either fire department should abstain from negotiations and voting on any fire contract. |

1 Visit: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/fire/pdfs/finy/07p... Now, scroll down to Steuben County. Notice that in 2007, Perkinsville FD responded to 24 calls. Wayland FD responded to 168 calls. These stats do not include ambulance calls and Wayland provides 2 ambulances while Perkinsville does not provide any EMS service at all. Wayland FD Ambulance responded to 329 EMS calls in 2007 and 376 EMS calls in 2008. So, to sum it up, in 2007, Wayland FD and Ambulance responded to a combined 497 calls. Perkinsville responded to a total of 24 calls. In 2007, the Town of Wayland paid both departments about the same. I believe it was 44,000. Based on those numbers, in 2007, town taxpayers paid an average of $88.53 per call for Wayland FD and $1833.33 per call for Perkinsville FD. Which is a better deal for the taxpayers in the Town of Wayland? To be completely open, I am a member of the Wayland Ambulance, but I am also a town taxpayer and a local businessman. My allegiance to my wallet is stronger than any allegiance I have to any fire department. We need to take the emotion out of these discussions and look at facts, while also looking at the best way to keep taxes low. Any new contract should look at the total call volume as well as the quality of the response. The data I presented above on fire call volume is publicly posted on the NYS website above and fire protection costs are presented in the reports at: http://www.openbooknewyork.com EMS statistics for 2008 are posted in the Fire Hall and monthly ambulance reports are presented to the Village Board. |

When I'm laying there with my hands clutching my chest cause I'm dying from a heart attack I wouldn't care if it was perk, wayland or the stonybrook ranger helping me out, get real people when you need them and there not there thats when you'll prey to god they were.

Motzart, I agree with your sentiment, but the qualifier should be which service is equipped to help someone. Out of the 3 agencies you mention, Wayland is the best equipped and trained, but I would choose the Park ranger over Perkinsville. Rangers and other law enforcement officials are required to receive regular CPR training and many carry defibrillators in their vehicles. Ultimately, the best option for a heart attack would be the nearest ambulance and the nearest ALS fly car. Without an ambulance, you can't transport a patient and an ALS fly car has virtually all of the equipment and medications that the ER would use for the first half hour of almost any patient call. The nearest ALS fly car is M-78 out of Dansville, but they are only a 16 hour unit. From approximately 11 PM to 7 AM, our closest ALS is either M-79 out of Geneseo or ALS-102 out of Bath.
Perk does not offer any EMS services and when the Wayland FD asked them, on several occasions over the past couple of years, if they would be interested in helping out with Ambulance staffing, the response we received was "We do not do EMS." We are always looking for people interested in helping the EMS service, whether it is as an Emergency Medical Technician or as a Driver. Wayland FD Ambulance currently has 15 EMTs and 2 other members who should be certified as EMTs within the next month. We also have at least 1 more member going into the next EMT class. If anybody is interested in helping our community by joining either the fire department or the ambulance service, let me know or talk to any other member of the department. Any member of the department is eligible for class sponsorships, so there is no out of pocket expense for the EMT or Firefighter classes. |

i hope you are never laying there cutching your chest or have a need for any medical treatment at all and have perkinsville or the stonybrook ranger show up. they have no medical training nor do they have an ambulance to transport you. have they been asked to help wayland with e.m.s.? they sure have numerous times but to no evail. |

perkinsville does a great job also. this isnt just about putting out fires that is a very small portion of what they both do. what this is about is a waste of taxpayers money, duplication of services, and putting way to much equipment on the road for no reason at all other than one department wants more calls. there should not be 2 departments responding to a call that can be handled by 1. if there is a structure fire you can be sure that one department is going to call the other along with all the neighboring departments. the public's safety is first and foremost and sending 2 departments to a line down or tree down or trash can fire in putting the public's safety in harm's way, ridiculous, and not needed.

DID PERKINSVILLE GET MONEY FROM THE TOWN BOARD TO BUY A NEW RESCUE TRUCK? I HEARD THEY WERE GETTING ONE AND THEY HAVE NO TOOLS TO PUT ON THIS TRUCK. SOUNDS LIKE A HUGE WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONIES.

I ALSO HEARD THEY CALL IT A SQUAD BECAUSE IT DOESNT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS THAT THE COUNTY IMPOSES ON THE DEPARTMENTS AND WHAT TOOLS A TRUCK MUST HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED A RESCUE. ALSO HEARD THEY PLAN TO ASK THE TOWN FOR MORE MONEY TO BUY THE TOOLS TO OUTFIT THE TRUCK TO MAKE IT A RESUCE. THIS IS AGAIN A HUGE WASTE OF TAXPAYER MONEY SINCE WAYLAND ALREADY HAS THE TOOLS AND THE MANPOWER AND THE TRAINING. DUPLICATION OF SERVICES AT IT'S BEST. THAT WOULD BE LIKE WAYLAND BUYING A TANKER. THEY DONT DO THAT BECASUE PERKINSVILLE, ATALNTA, COHOCTON, SOUTH DANSVILLE, SPARTA, AND I THINK FREMONT ALL HAVE ONE. THEY ALL RELY ON EACH OTHER FOR EQUIPMENT SO THEY DONT HAVE TO ASK THEIR BOARDS FOR MORE MONEY TO BUY SOMETHING SOMEONE NEARBY HAS. APPARENTLY THE RESUCE TRUCKS AND TOOLS AND MANPOWER IN WAYLAND, DANSVILLE, AND COHOCTON AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR PERKINSVILLE. THEY ARE GOING TO BECOME A SELF SUSTAINING DEPARTMENT THAT HAS ALL THE PRETTY EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS BUT NO MANPOWER OR TRAINING TO USE IT ALL.

Thank your Wayland Town Board members for thinking of themselves not the taxpayers.

Perkinsville is disfunctional at best. Pull their equipment into Wayland and do away with the massive waste of money.
