When I went to school, the song and dance in the university financial aide office praised the merits and ethincal standards of Sallie Mae. I heard how SLM is a conscientious company, a pert of the government, began in order to help everyone have a college education. I heard how SLM, more than anyone, wants to reinvest in the community by lending to students, creating jobs, and forgiving those who come under hard times or are disabled.
The loan was clumped together with the grants and scholarships. I had to accept all or nothing so I foolishly signed.
more than 15 years later, I have paid for the supposed borrowed money twice and am still delinquent.
And all calls to their office are answered by thier India based customer center. These intentionally ignorant staff are cleverly clueless and will feign ignorance when one requests copies of promisary notes, itemized payment histories, and specific breakdowns of alleged loan charges, credits and totals.
I warn all who visit a finacial aide office...these lenders are underhanded and downright nasty. Their countless covertly held company affiliates, and edfund are another lesson in abusive tactics.
Edfund is probably the worst. I have yet to talk to a decently behaving staff person yet. These call clones will speak to you like you are trash and laugh when you ask them for an itemized statement or any document copies (ones with your actual signature) and all but tell you to go stuff yourself.
Sallie Mae must have most call centers in India as the last 12 times I have called...I am always answered from someone in India.(I have asked them specifically...are you in India? and they have all, albeit hesitatingly answered...Yes.) I suspect it is cheaper to pay these people overseas than for SLM to consider paying an American....
Again this runs counter to the speal I got from the fin aide office about how sallie mae cares so much and wants to reinvest and support our communities...then..if that is the case...why are they running their offices out of India!!! Sallie Mae is a federally sponsored blight upon all of us: like other developed countries, we need to have acces to education regardless of financial resources..and we must be free to enjoy an education without shouldering the beastly burden of government sponsored loan indebtedness.
Sallie Mae sucks up (in government subsidies and pork) what would otherwise directly cover tuition and school costs!
