A Town No Stranger To Trouble
The town got its start in 1915. It was founded by the Picher Mining Company after large amounts of lead and zinc were found.

If this town has lead and metal issues why wouldn't teh residents be happy to relocate. I am not understanding why folks would say keep your hands off when this is a legitamate reason to move right?

Last year I started researching the enviroment effects of natural disasters verses man-made disasters.There is no doubt in my mind that man can cause more devistation and longer lasting effects on the enviroment.During my research of the Superfund sites in America.(I am really supriesed at how many there are and how little there is being done about cleaning up.)When I came across Picher I was horrified.There is no sense in this.I guess they(the goverment)thought if the mess was left alone it would be safe to just fence off places like this.Guess what,the run off from waste piles pollutes our drinking water.The wind carries the contaminated dust for miles.My heart goes out to the people of Picher.

you would not understand i was raised in picher and its more than that it is the ties you have the friendships the family the moral of this small town. so no some people didn't want to give that up and the people who did still go back because it was the way of our up bringing i had 6 generations at picher oklahoma so you can kiss this chat rats ass

No offense takin but wouldn't the air be bad for your health? I am not tryin to take away from the town you love but what about the children? Is it not hazardous?

Maybe the mayor should reach deep into his pocket for the money he has stolen and rebuild the town.
