Amish Sewage Standoff

While the Amish certainly have the right to live how they see fit, the county has a duty to ensure that people are suitably protected from disease. I think that the ultimate answer comes down to a question of whether or not anyone else is harmed by them not being hooked up to proper sewage lines. If the only efect on the county is to the Amish families themselves, then leave them alone. On the other hand, if the Amish families are endangering others with the improper disposal of sewage, then the county is correct in requiring sewer lines, whether the Amish like it or not.

I haven't heard an proof that the Amish man's practice was harming anyone else! I don't believe anyone is asserting that.

This is simply the State wanting the Amish man to recognize there authority in this area, which according to the Amish man's belief, the state does not have authority in this area.

This town is going to put people out of their homes and padlock the doors to force them to be like everyone else. Sheep following the leader.

They still don't do it so let's put them in jail? That will force them to give up what they believe in and spend all kinds of money to put in a $20 or 30,000 sewer so that they are like everyone else.

Then what? They still don't do it so how about taking their land and maybe beating them into submission?

Or maybe we could bring back the death penality for such disobedience?

Yeah that's it! Let's just skip all the small steps and let the Code Enforcement Officer carry a gun and shoot all the Amish she finds.

You don't want the Amish accepting anything from the state, but then you put them in jail for not wanting the state to interfere with their private life. At taxpayer expense.....

How much does that cost per day? And who foots the bill?

Leave them alone and worry about the real criminals. You know, the ones who are killing people and raping, drinking and driving on your roads, or stealing your idenity and money from your bank accounts, selling drugs to your children.......Save your jail cells for them and don't promote the spending of your tax dollars to be used for chipping away of the belief of a few people.

And as for those who get on here and yap about things they know nothing about, ignore them. They are so busy trying to get everyone to follow them, that they ignore reality. How many of those Amish are putting out so much sewage that it will actually get into the groundwater?

Your farm animals put out more than they do. What is next? Make the farmers put diapers on their cows or train them to use toilets? Get real.

Ah, crap from farm animals is already doing a lot of harm, Dude, where have you been? Especially from factory farms.
The code and legal people have been bending over backwards in there efforts to work with the Amish to find a solution. If compliance is ignored for the Amish, who will decide next that they don't want to comply either?

I agree with Judge Krumenaker and Easy. As a life-long Pennsylvanian for 56 years, have always been a friend to my Amish neighbors in Honey Brook (Chester County) and the Schartzentruber Amish here in Cambria County. I have also worked in Bucks County and Philadelphia and have some opinion regarding health and building permits. Eating food fertilized by human feces is not healthy. Back in early civilized Philadelphia, human waste went to leech fields. Human waste is loaded with bacteria and poison.
