After completing my four miserable, pointless years at columbia high school, I now realize all of the flaws and real priorities that the school has. I have learned next to nothing from studying there for 4 years. The english department is a huge joke, I had about 6-7 english teachers throughout 4 years.. thats saying something. Also, The school spends all of the money on athletics, mostly football, and bitches at kids for using "too much paper". The teachers are inadequate to say the least. Most of them gossip and act like they are in highschool still- maybe because most of them are only 22-30 years old. Kind of weird how the last 5-6 hirees happened to be good looking females right out of college? The programs and schedules that CHS administers is a complete joke/daycare system. Things such as TLC, Advisory, and ZAP are all pointless. Especially advisory- why would students be forced to sit in their 7th peroid class for an extra half hour just so "clubs" can meet- the "clubs" are a joke- they dont actually do anything. The counselours remind me of a celebrity or a famous person when it comes to scheduling an appointment to talk about coursework or clas schedules- meaning taht they ignore you. All in all, If you are reading this, i would seriously consider sending your kids to a different school. Columbia might look like it has good academics and sports; however this is a false portrayal of what the school really consists of. I feel as if the administration is lazy and only tend to care about discipline. Many of the veteran teachers often HINT complaints of the new adminsitration, and all of the new programs. Overall- Columbia High School will NOT prepare you for college- the counselours only seem to care about the lazy dumb kids who arent even going to make it through SWIC - its annoying how the intellectual individuals at Columbia High School are often ignored- except when it comes to PSAE tests, etc- so the school can LOOK good

One would blow this off as some malcontent kid that didn't do well and has an axe to grind. But you sound very convincing as highly intelligent and truly concerned. To get an inside look at any school system from an accomplished student is rare. Hopefully other current and past students can post offering their views, both good and bad, in an effort to improve the system, if needed. Hard to judge with just one post. With the money spent from taxpayers on this system, it should be a very good school system. They seem to be a good school system to me, but then, who really knows but the students. Still, good post concerned student. Any others? No bashing needed, just helpful facts.

Fu**in cry baby HS kids! These kids have such a sense of entitlement. Get over yourself! You're probably a shit head kid that doesn't take the curriculum serious, then gets on topix and bashes the school. I can't wait till you join the real world. Go cry to your mommy while you still can.

Don't let the negative comments bother you here concerned student. I found your comment to be fairly expressive. Contrary to well then's thoughts, I think that the teachers did an alright job with you. Your post calls for some intelligent debate. The truth will come out as to the quality of the system over time, as long as people can stay on topic without getting ignorant. The insulters and mean spirited posters can't debate with intelligence. They tend to ruin the true positive aspects of topix. So if you read this, and reply with an open mind, that would be great. If all you want to do is try to piss people off, or be arrogant, post somewhere else. I'm sure there is a thread somewhere for losers.

As long as school board members are able to be elected while their kids are still in highschool, hard decisions, fiscal responsibility, and neccesary change will not be implemented.

Honestly, as an individual who just watched my kid get an award through Wash U/STL U this summer through a summer research program I started to wonder how many kids from CHS have been enrolled in the program having grown up in Columbia. So I went through the list of past participants. The program is 16 years strong featuring approximately 75 kids a year. My findings....NOT ONE CHS STUDENT. EVER :(

Someone in the CHS Guidance Counselor offices is not doing their job to offer opportunities like this. Most of these kids are taking this program on the applications and getting scholarships or free rides and this program helps them tremendously. I talked with kids who were going to Vanderbilt, Emory, Michigan, Wash U, etc.

Surely some CHS student could have made this program over the last 16 years? Plenty of Country Day/CBC/Parkway/Mary Institute/Eureka etc students from MO. I also saw many Althoff/Belleville/O'Fallon/ Mascoutah/Edwardsville etc. students from IL over the years. But I did not see a single one from Columbia? That tells me either one of two things: The Guidance office at CHS is useless, or the academics are not strong enough for the students to make the grade for a program such as this. I don't know the right answer, but I do suspect that CHS is way behind.

hah alright mr... high school isn't a "fake world" you face many of the same problems. you probably have a job for an uneducated person and are too ignorant to see the flaws in the school system. I know firsthand, because I am a student. Can you please share some of your experiences that swayed your opinion this way?

All righty, then. First of all, your OP is filled with errors. Level of errors? Maybe high 5th grade. Even so, I am asking you to look back. Public education is not the be all/ end all of the town. PARENTS have a say-so.

By Middle School, students have a voice in their education. Yours was apparently silent.

But, there are programs out there to help. Investigate. Learn. And, most of all, stop blaming everyone for your slacking off and refusing to learn.

I love stupid people! Especially the ones that have NO clue about arithmetic!! They are the easiest ones to make money off of!!! Like taking candy from a baby!! They just sit there with a bewildered look on their face wondering what happened to all their money!!

I actually thought the curriculum was extremely easy- not hard. That is why i said it is a joke- not impossible. I don't understand why random adults need to post irrelevant hateful comments when they have no knowledge of the subject. These ignorant adults are more than likely a graduate from CHS. (that says something)

Whoever started this thread obviously has disciplinary problems. Claims the school is lazy and only cares about disciplining students? Wouldn't that make them not lazy? He/she also claims that they won't prepare you for college, yet the PSAE scores are in the top 10% in the state. Everything written in the first post is a contradiction, my guess is out of spite due to disciplinary problems.

Go to the back of the line Poor guy. You need some disciplining yourself. Your kind are always striking out and making assumptions based on your own opinions. Opinions are great when made with true concern and a thoughtful process. Your kind of post is just poison to an educated debate. Whoever started this thead posted an opnion. It doesn't mean that he or she had problems just because you didn't agree with that opnion. I'll take concerned students post anytime over yours. You apparently are one of the problems at CHS. How does that feel. What goes around you know.

Whatever! I graduated from Granite City HS in 01', I graduated from NIU IN 06'. GCHS had a ton of distractions, fights, teacher gossip, big time football controversy, etc. The one thing that is always true is that if you are willing to learn the teachers are willing to teach, it makes their job easier. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying this argument that the teachers don't care blah, blah, blah. Your education is what you make of it, I'm proof of that! There's definitely an ulterior motive for starting this thread, I stand by everything I said.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
