I’ve not read the book but I absolutely loved this!!!

3,900 Saturdays
.
The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday morning. Perhaps it's the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.

A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it:

I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net. Along the way, I came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business. He was telling whomever he was talking with something about "a thousand marbles." I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say.
"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's dance recital," he continued; "Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities." And that's when he began to explain his theory of a "thousand marbles."

"You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.

Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3,900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part.

CONTINUED FROM THE ABOVE POST.....

It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail," he went on, "and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1,000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the shack next to my gear.

Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life.

There's nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.
Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time.

It was nice to meet you Tom. I hope you spend more time with your family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band. This is a 75 year old man, K9NZQ, clear and going QRT, good morning!"

You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to work on the next club newsletter.

Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. "C'mon honey, I'm taking you and the kids to breakfast."

"What brought this on?" she asked with a smile.

"Oh, nothing special, it's just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toy store while we're out? I need to buy some marbles."

Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

Most people have heard or sung the soaring music of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." The majestic oratorio proclaims, "For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth and He shall reign forever and ever, King of kings! And Lord of lords. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!"

The composer of the "Hallelujah Chorus" was the legendary musician George Frederick Handel who lived from 1685 until 1759. But did you know that late in his life, everything went south and turned sour for the great composer? He lost the HANDLE - so to speak. Handel lost his fortune, his health, and nearly his hope. His critics claimed, he was burned out and outdated. In the darkest part of his valley, he faced bankruptcy and the embarrassing threat of debtor's prison seemed unavoidable.

In God's gracious timing, Charles Jennings a wealthy patron and true friend, asked Handel to compose music and orchestration that would capture the Bible's theme of redemption. Jennings proposed that the text would be completely Scripture. Handel had grown old, tired and emotionally defeated-but he mustered just enough courage and faith to embrace the assignment. He began writing the oratorio that is known as Handel's Messiah. He projected that it would take a year to compose; but God inspired him. He wrote day and night and completed the 260 page manuscript in 24 days. God enabled Handel to fight back from failure and make his greatest contribution to the music world. You might even say that Handel made a remarkable come Bach!

Next time you hear the "Hallelujah Chorus" be reminded of a man who had lost his song, but he found restoration and redemption as he tapped into God's help and hope to write some of the greatest music ever shared. The miracle of the Messiah continues in these days before Christmas because God is still in the business of changing lives, by moving people from ruin to redemption and from dark despair to bright hope!

Words of Wisdom (Part 2)

I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.

I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a life.

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back...

I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision..

I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one..

I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone.. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back...

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn..

I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

A boy with a rusty birdcage walked by a preacher.
“What are you going to do with that bird? asked the preacher.
“Oh, I’m just going to poke sticks at it, shake the cage,
throw water on it…fun things like that.”
“What are you going to do after that?”
“ I don’t know; probably just feed it to the cats.”

“I will give my life.”
Jesus paid the price, and set us free (Ephesians 1:7).

Ad FREE and many diff. styles of music. Wow!!!

At home, work,… I go to Rhapsody and listen to their free radio at http://www.rhapsody.com/radio . It is sooooo awesome. I think you'll love it! It has lots of awesome stations and it’s ad free. I listen to contemporary Christian quite a bit.

When I get tired of one style of music, I can just change it to another such as classical, country, 50s, hawaiian, etc... whatever. I absolutely love, love, love it!!

The Strangest Secret
by Earl Nightingale

“George Bernard Shaw said, "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them."
Well, it's pretty apparent, isn't it? And every person who discovered this believed (for a while) that he was the first one to work it out. We become what we think about.
Conversely, the person who has no goal, who doesn't know where he's going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion, anxiety and worry - his life becomes one of frustration, fear, anxiety and worry. And if he thinks about nothing... he becomes nothing.
How does it work? Why do we become what we think about? Well, I'll tell you how it works, as far as we know. To do this, I want to tell you about a situation that parallels the human mind.
Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.
We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.
Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand- one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds-one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land...and what will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.
As it's written in the Bible, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."
Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants - one corn, one poison.
The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.
You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant.”

He was in the first third grade class I taught at Saint Mary's School in Morris, Minnesota. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark Eklund was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional mischievousness delightful.

Mark talked incessantly. I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving. "Thank you for correcting me, Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first, but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.

One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often, and then I made a novice teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut!" It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck blurted out, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it. I remember the scene as if it had occurred this morning. I walked to my desk, very deliberately opened my drawer and took out a roll of masking tape. Without saying a word, I proceeded to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X with them over his mouth. I then returned to the front of the room. As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked at me. That did it! I started laughing. The class cheered as I walked back to Mark's desk, removed the tape, and shrugged my shoulders. His first words were, "Thank you for correcting me, Sister."

At the end of the year, I was asked to teach junior-high math. The years flew by, and before I knew it Mark was in my classroom again. He was more handsome than ever and just as polite. Since he had to listen carefully to my instruction in the "new math," he did not talk as much in ninth grade as he had in third. One Friday, things just didn't feel right. We had worked hard on a new concept all week, and I sensed that the students were frowning, frustrated with themselves and edgy with one another. I had to stop this crankiness before it got out of hand. So I asked them to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed me the papers. Charlie smiled. Mark said, "Thank you for teaching me, Sister. Have a good weekend." That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and I listed what everyone else had said about that individual.

On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" I heard whispered. "I never knew that meant anything to anyone! I didn't know others liked me so much." No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. I never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another again.

That group of students moved on. Several years later, after I returned from vacation, my parents met me at the airport. As we were driving home, Mother asked me the usual questions about the trip, the weather, my experiences in general. There was a lull in the conversation. Mother gave Dad a sideways glance and simply said, "Dad?" My father cleared his throat as he usually did before something important. "The Eklunds called last night," he began. "Really?" I said. "I haven't heard from them in years. I wonder how Mark is." Dad responded quietly. "Mark was killed in Vietnam," he said. "The funeral is tomorrow, and his parents would like it if you could attend." To this day I can still point to the exact spot on I-494 where Dad told me about Mark.

I had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. Mark looked so handsome, so mature. All I could think at that moment was, "Mark, I would give all the masking tape in the world if only you would talk to me." The church was packed with Mark's friends. Chuck's sister sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Why did it have to rain on the day of the funeral? It was difficult enough at the graveside. The pastor said the usual prayers, and the bugler played taps. One by one those who loved Mark took a last walk by the coffin and sprinkled it with holy water. I was the last one to bless the coffin. As I stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to me. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. I nodded as I continued to stare at the coffin. "Mark talked about you a lot," he said.

After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates headed to Chuck's farmhouse for lunch. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting for me. "We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it." Mark's classmates started to gather around us. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. I keep it in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said without batting an eyelash. "I think we all saved our lists." That's when I finally sat down and cried. I cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

“The Apologetics Study Bible” INFO.

I can't wait to dig in. I'm taking my sweet time it seems like but I'll get there. I am excited at the thought of all of the things I'm going to encounter in the studies. I'm sure it will take me years because of the other things in life that tug but I'm excited at starting the adventure.

I love a good Study Bible. I just didn’t know about the Apologetics one until now.

I will note this just as an FYI as someone had called it to my attention in the past. It’s just additional information to consider when reading the study bible:

“…I would like to point out a shortcoming of all study Bibles: The "study" part is an interpretation of a certain person or group.

Introductions and notes from one study Bible will often conflict with the information (actually opinions) from another study Bible. The Bible itself is the word of God, but the notes are the word of man. I'm not saying that the notes are wrong, just that to really study the Bible, you should compare the notes from 2 or more study Bibles instead of accepting the opinion expressed in one particular study Bible…”

Ted Cabal (B.A., M.A. Dallas Baptist University; M. Div., Ph.D. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is Professor of Christian Philosophy and Applied Apologetics at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. Once an ardent atheist, Dr. Cabal was converted while reading the New Testament Gospels.

Dr. Brand is gifted as a scholar, apologist, pastor, and student of contemporary culture and religion. He is co-editor and author of the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary.

E. Ray Clendenen (B.A., Rice University; ThM,. Dallas Theological Seminary; M.A. Dropsie University; Ph.D. the University of Texas in Arlington) is Director of Academic Publishing, B & H Publishing Group, Nashville, TN. He has been the architect of The Apologetics Study Bible within B & H Publishing Group.

Paul Copan (B.A., Columbia International University; M.A., M.Div., Trinity International University; Ph.D., Marquette University.) holds the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics at Palm Beach Atlantic University, West Palm Beach, FL. He is the author of True for You, But Not for Me, That’s Just Your Interpretation and How Do You Know You’re Not Wrong?, as well as coauthor (with William Lane Craig) of Creation Out of Nothing: A Biblical, Philosophical, and Scientific Exploration.

J.P. Moreland (B.S., University of Missouri; M.A., University of California, Riverside; Th. M., Dallas Theological Seminary; Ph.D. University of Southern California) is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Talvot School of Theology, La Mirada, CA. He has authored or co-authored books including Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview; Christianity and the Nature of Science; Scaling the Secular City; Does God Exist?; Immortality: The Other Side of Death; and The Life and Death Debate: Moral Issues of Our Times. He is co-editor of Christian Perspectives on Being Human and Jesus Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents the Historical Jesus. His work appears in journals such as Christianity Today, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and The American Philosophical Quarterly. Dr. Moreland served with Campus Crusade for 10 years, planted two churches, and has spoken on over 200 college campuses.

A lady woke one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only three hairs on her head.“Well,” she said,“I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did, and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed she had only two hairs on her head.“Hmmm,” she said,“I think I’ll part my hair in the middle today.” So she did, and she had a great day.
