While I think it's easier to hate a demographic and a lot more tempting...I think coming down on "baby boomers" isn't quite right. My parents are shitty people no doubt, but my father hasn't missed a day of work in 40 years. It depends on the person. I think that poor politics set in place are the cause of so many issues. Sociologically, our parents were kind of in the same place as us. We don't like our government, we don't like how we have to live, times are hard. They outlet-ed how they could, protesting, experimentation. What do you think we do now? You think we should blame it on our parents because we are doing the same thing they did? Maybe I'm wrong. I'm a little on the fence. It sucks that they are benefiting from our tax dollars, but that's because the government made that possible for them. Besides...aren't they the only ones with jobs paying all the taxes? Hah! I think more wealthy people need to croak. I don't know.Just throwing something out there to think about when coming to a reasonable dual-sided conclusion. There's always two sides to a story.

I was always given the response that I had "no idea what poor really was" and that back in the day, there weren't enough shoes for all the siblings feet,(and yadda-yadda-yadda) when I asked my baby booming relatives why they had to have so much. A fridge in the house, two in the garage, three deep freezes, three cars, two boats, an RV and acres of land that aren't used for a damn thing. All for two people?! I guess why I get so pissed is because the excess I see didn't come from "hard work" so much as hiring a real slick guy for a lump sum retirement investment. Pure dumb luck and social security? And these assets belong to a warehouse worker (lucky enough to belong to a union, if you can remember hearing of those things?) and a secretary (now retired, of course)! Not in this day in my generation...but thanks for always voting (R) now that you got some money to worry about! And the hypocritical church goin...good job! I wonder if you can fool Jesus too? Oh and that neighbor lady you "helped" in a time of need, but just had to tell everyone about it so they could bask in your charitable glory? I wonder how much she appreciates the entire town knowing her business? But you go on ahead and bitch about how you lost a ton in the market the past year or two....and I will keep going to work in a job that I haven't had a raise in three years so you can laugh when your SS money drops into your "little" checking account. And whats really fucked up is I HAVE A FORMAL EDUCATION and you never got past grade twelve!!! Not all boomers are this way....just most the ones I am related too :(

We were lucky enough to have it a little rough while growing up just to learn that you have to do honest work to have money to spend and a roof over our heads. We have work ethics that the youngin's these days do not have. Most will not get a job and want things handed to them on a platter. We are the ones paying into Social Security and suppporting retired people and also people that are disabled. So why are we so bad? You reap what you sow. If you are jealous of the baby boomers you might try to be more like us and be honest hard workers. Oh so you still work and pay into SS? ME TOO since I was 16! But I won't ever get to use it, your welcome in advance :) And while I agree with you as to my generation's work ethic being less than desirable, what is even more infuriating for me is knowing that you boomers have what you have not so much because of your work ethic...but because you were lucky to live in a time when people sympathized with us not-quite-middle-class-working -poor-folks. Now you all are voting in droves to keep your piece of the pie safe while I can't even get a cost of living raise. Back in the day loyalty to a company meant something...not anymore! Aw shucks ma'am, it ain't your fault you were just lucky to have been born when you were, right? Yuckin it up all the way to the bank!

RE: Boomers are not WINNING Couldn't agree more. Try teaching the overly indulged children of the generation that coined and embodied the phrase "helicopter parent." It used to be that when the teacher called home, my parent would scold me and say "what did you do to that poor teacher??!!" Nowadays - and I have experienced this first hand - when the teacher calls home, the parent says, "What did that teacher do to you??!!" What's wrong with this picture?? Oh, I know... people who have no respect for authority teaching their kids they don't have to have it either might have something to do with it. I have one thing to say to the baby boomers: How dare you?? Here's my biggest gripe with these folks: I recently watched a seven-part documentary about WWII. The people who fought that war - at home and overseas - literally saved this world from tyranny and destruction. And then the boomers came along, went to Woodstock and where ever else, got really high or tripped out or whatever and decided they didn't have to pay respect to the people who saved their and our lives. Well, how dare you? And. Shame on you. Now, is this every Baby Boomer? I hope not. But the cross section I've seen from teaching their kids leaves me to doubt. I believe that Baby Boomers have destroyed parenting by OVER-advocating for their kids and not allowing them to FAIL. Kids need to FAIL. How else can they learn? Ever hear of trial and error? The pervasive idea is that Boomers want to shield their kids from harm and discomfort. Well, to quote one of my favorite movies, "Life is pain, highness. Anyone who tells you different is selling you something." (THE PRINCESS BRIDE). Aye me... but I ramble. But remember - the generation rejected their parents (remember the ones who saved the world?), anointed themselves exempt from morality when they dropped out with Timothy Leary and burned their bras. And now, those self-crowned narcissists have decided that there don't have to be any rules in - oh let's just say - the BANKING INDUSTRY (e.g., sub prime mortgage scandal) or, uh - how 'bout WALL STREET ('nuff said). Friends, take a look around - free love ain't free. I'm going to be paying for it - no wait, my kids are going to be paying for it... NO WAIT - MY GRANDKIDS are going to be paying for it for as long as they can draw breath. I'm 43, I work hard, I vote, I pay taxes. I punish my kids when they deserve it. I praise them when they EARN it. I don't believe that I deserve anything I haven't worked hard to acquire. Nothing is owed to me that I haven't earned for myself. I believe in god and I am NOT a fundamentalist in any way shape or form. I love this country. It saved my life by giving my grandparents a home over 100 years ago. Sleep well.

But a lot of Boomers turned into yuppies who were happy to break a decent job into a few part time jobs w/o benefits so they could buy their BMW or McMansion. The statics are that the majority of boomers will have to work till 70 (or latter) and won't give up their jobs for the next generation - mostly cause they didn't prepare. Meanwhile they saddle the nation w/ debt and make it nearly impossible for younger generations to fund our retirements as we'll be paying health care costs for you...

It's their lack of civics which I despise.
The 4th and 5th amendment are now essentially gone with the Patriot Act and the new NDAA. They've allow the national debt to go up by 9.4% a year on average since 1971.
Today, the federal tax revenue is less than 16% of the national debt, the lowest it's ever been, and its going lower.
These fools were deceived into going into Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist, and some still believe there were weapons of mass destruction there. They have sent the X and Y into Iraq now, when they were protesting the Vietnam war,*and* they were educated about the Pentagon Papers.
I also despise the fact that they think they had something to do with civil rights. When Rosa Parks was arrested, the oldest boomer was all of 9 years old, and when the Civil Rights act was passed, the oldest boomer was a whooping 18 years old. The Silent Generation ended segregation, not them, but they still think they were instrumental in it.
What are their accomplishments? Generation X made the Internet, not them. I suppose Steve Wozniac brought on the advent of the personal computer but it was Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan that made the foundation for everything we use today - they were the Silent Generation.
As far as I can tell, the biggest contribution to society they've made is bringing STD's to a comeback during the 1960's, then enacting federal prison laws for doing the same drugs they did with abandon. They've destroyed they economy, believe every word on television news as gospel, and are by far, the most brainwashed generation we've ever had. Here's a group of people that think that a media that sold the country on "the New Economy" and "weapons of mass destruction" and "the housing bubble won't bust" and then finally "green shoots" - still trusts this same media that is saying Iran has a nuclear bomb.
They're so freaking stupid it's amazing. Here we now have Obama how is nothing more than George W. Bush with a tan after a diction class matched up with Mitt Romney who supports ever single policy Obama is enforcing now, and they think we still live in a dumbocracy.
When the USSR collapsed, the old people simply starved because they were broke and had no ability to make any money and the younger generations just laughed at them. The same will happen here, and it's just desserts. This is what happens when you don't pay attention for 40 years. The entire Social Security Trust Fund is "invested" in Treasury Bills - you know, government debt. To actually pay that off, general tax revenue has to increase, and general tax revenue is less than 16 of the national debt.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what debts aren't going to be paid back, but it's not like the boomers paid much into Society Security anyhow and they certainly didn't do bupkis to oversee their corrupt out of control government.

And you're a little arrogant, aren't you? You're the reason why I hate boomers.

I could be wrong. smug selfish boomer? Working for everything you get and paying as you go is smug and selfish? Never thought of it that way, but then, expecting the world to owe you something just because you were born is not my cup of tea either.
