What are some of your favorite memories? What positive things would you like to see happening here? Please, keep it clean and positive.
Let me start. My fondest memories from growing up here include my grandmother's kitchen, Goldie's donut shop, and the "rocket" at Pfister park before it was deemed unsafe and torn down.
What I would like to see happening here? More things to encourage the younger members of the community to remain here by choice, not necessity, and provide a living for the future generation, be it jobs with decent pay, and activities for youth other than the skating rink in the fall or the water park in the summer. Perhaps a skate park? There seems to be a lot of youth who skateboard and have nowhere to go other than abandoned parking lots and buildings or the middle of the public streets.
I have two boys who skateboard and bike. They are really good boys, not vandals. I know there was a plan to provide boarders a safe place to skate, but I do not know if there has been much progress with it?

I would like to see the areas bought out by Coffeyville Resourses after the flood made into parks area with picnic tables, seating benches and lights. Also think it would be great if they could also build a few areas with fountain areas like the one on the plaza for children of all ages to have free heat retreat areas to play in. Maybe a bandstand like the one in Indy park and skateboard/rollerskating areas.
It would beautify the area and be beneficial for all! They could name the areas Coffeyville Resourses Give-Back Park! Shoot, they could probably find a way to get tax breaks for it!

How many parks can one small town use? Who's going to pay to have them landscaped and maintained? Hell, the town already can't keep up with all the mowing that needs to be done.

i remember the Rocket slide at Pfister park. if i remember right, that whole section of the park was done away with to make room for the front 9 at Hillcrest. i also remember actually being able to go to the theatre without going out of town. i realize the economy in town has been diminishing for years, but if some things dont change, im afraid our little town will dwindle away. there is such an apathetic attitude within the community though.

Great -- add more parks and let them look terrible, or raise taxes so the additional parks will have even basic upkeep; then you can wonder why, even with higher taxes, your streets are STILL in disrepair.

I remember going to the DQ and the A&W, sitting around the parking lots and visiting with everyone, because you KNEW everyone back then.

I also remember the rocket at Phister Park.. With the big tumbler thing..That if you were really good and kinda strong you could get it to go over the top..

8th street use to be the ticket. There would be cars all the way around the school,Nu-Way parking lot and Muffler City.I use to enjoy going to the drive inn on saturday nights then leaving and going to the mid night drags in Tulsa. I now have a son who is in high school and there is nothing for teenagers to do without the cops giving them a bunch of BS. I'm talking about parking to hang out with friends. But my fondest memorey would have to be trying to find a open spot on Roosevelt drive.LOL I could go on and on

I remember swimming lessons at Harmon pool, the A&W, Junge's bakery, the shopping center on Fourth that burned. There was actually a park at North Park, and on one of the little streets that now butt up against the west fence of the refinery.

JC Penney's had Boston baked beans in a little "gumball" machine, Pearl Richardson sca
red the beJeezus out of me. La Tienda had good food, there was a time before McDonald's. Nu-Gift was a nice place to buy a present, the Hallmark store fascinatted me.

I used to go to the Peter Pan ice cream store on 8th with my granddad to get "Napolean" striped ice cream.

Downtown was busy, and we had Wal-Mart, Gibson's, TG&Y.

Blanche's place had spaghetti, and I loved the Pig Stand's "pig" sandwich.

I wasn't born and raised here, but recall a slide close to where the rocket slide was that was like two circles on a pole that you walked in to make it travel up and around. It seemed as if it were 50 ft high from a kids point of view. Does anyone remember it and what the townsfolk called it?

i think maybe we should open a group home up for children and hire people to work there. this way we can be helping the children that need a place to live and also provide more jobs in the area as well and maybe put in few teen spots that are drug and gang free so that the kids who like to have some thing to do can with out getting into trouble i know we have the boys and girls club but they dont get out much i mean yes they go swimmin and skateing but what else do they do. im talking about a hang out where they can play music and sing maybe take some dance lessions or some thing i know my kids would like it. they complain they are bored all the time but beside riding their bikes what else is there to do here for them....just a thought i know there are thousands of children just here in kansas without a place to call home that just want to be hug and loved
that place good

I remember trees that grew from both sides of the street that enclosed it all in a green tunnel. How about state lake with the 2 diving towers, the "beach" and the little bait shop on the point where you could rent a tube, canoe or paddle boat?
I remember being able to drive all the way through on river road, by both dams and the bluffs.
the cruise on 8th, with A-W. Still have my mugs and window tray.( sorry Mr.Steele). The cops didnt hassle or seem to eager to assert their authority, they just wanted to help and keep folks safe. Nicely. if they caught you with a beer or a loaded Sonic drink, they just made you pour it out.
It always leaves me a little angry when I think of those days and the things we had then. It seems the fashion to blame external things for the decline, but I think the people have changed too. folks used to take pride in their property and kept it neat. They didn't park cars in their yards or let junk pile up. We used to know most everyone in the neighborhood and you knew whose kids were whos. People took an interest in each other, were polite and friendly...okay enough of that....Georges Cafeteria..Ted's grill...pig stand...Tony's bakery...
