"When parents aren't interested in their children's education, that shapes students' attitudes — or utter apathy — toward school, Shoul said. She sees students at Coconut Creek High doing just what they need to do to pass, and nothing more."

This article fails to mention that the principal who left was only there one year. The problems this school faces have accumulated over years of neglect. I would leave too if I had to face apathy and a lack of support from the parents and the board.

Public schools down here are becoming more like prisons and less like educational facilities. Before long, school officials will just tell parents to drop their kids off and leave them there until they graduate. Lack of parenting is a glaring problem. Moreover, in order to learn you have to want to learn. No amount of motivational tricks will work. You either want to learn or you don't. This is why so many people fail at life. They go their entire life expecting someone else to spoon feed or give them something for nothing. Nots not the way the REAL world works.

Are you kidding, " what happened to Coconut Creek High". The school has been and will always be a ghetto school filled with dangerous felons that should be locked up. The school is nothing is a training ground for the Florida Department of Corrections.

The Broward Public School system is not giving the tax payer and students their moneys worth. Parents need to do more and not depend on the School System to raise their children.

Most high schools throughout the county are maintained by staff that are incompantant, unprofessional and have poor attitudes. Yet the pay and benefits are above what most would make doing the same work anywhere else in South Florida.
A lot of the high schools don't require their staff to wear identification badges. Sometimes it's difficult to tell if a person works at the school or is homeless person passing through.

How do you think this diversity notion is working for our country? Are we a better, stronger, more vital nation because of diversity and all the associated fallout? Tragically, South Florida has become a third world refuse depository. What a shame what has happened to a once beautiful place to live. I was born and raised there and simply had to leave.

Coconut Creek has just not been run well for a long time. I work in another high school and would be aghast when CC students transferred.
They were low level readers who somehow were not taking reading classes. They were not being challenged. It was obvious the place was disorganized and chaotic. New leadership is a must. And teachers and students need to know on Day One
that it is a new day with no nonsense.

They have been complaining about this school as long as I have been living in Coconut Creek - 10 years - and it has been getting worse - I have heard the talk of the magnet school working in conjunction with BCC north -- all it was is lip service. Adding vocational classes - when did they leave - when I graduated HS we had industrial arts, automotive repair, secretarial, cosmotology classes and they were within the school we didn't have to go to a separate vocational school. We even had Ag (agricultural classes)- which in this day and age of natural gardening would be something you all might want to add.
But yes all the problems start at home, you can motivate at school all you want but when they go home and there is no support ... ever think of putting dress codes in - all I see is indecent exposure of students coming in with their pants below there butts - the prison look - does that tell you about their mindset.
The boundaries definitely need to change - there is enough vacant land in North Lauderdale to build another High School and watch out Coconut Creek Elementary they are now starting to bus in students from overcrowded schools in Pompano - so I am sure their FCATs will start suffering too
It is time to stop waiting School Board of Broward County - sh.. or get off the pot ... it just reflects back to the school district ...

It is all a matter of money.Just give the teachers and administrators the raises, and benefits they demand, and every student will get straight A's. Isn't that what everyone says?

Let's see, politcians blame the School Board, the School Board blames the administration, the administration blames the teachers, the teachers blame the parents, and the parents don't really care. What about placing the blame where it really belongs, on the student taking the test? The school offers AP courses, so they are already offering courses that allow students to excell if they desire. The school offers a variety of courses to meet the basic educational needs of high school students. It is now their responsibility to achieve. There are teachers there to help, there is administrative staff to help, the parents sit and home, they can help. The politicians are never any help. Students need to learn that it is their responsibility to learn for their own wellbeing. Students who are satified with just getting by need to learn the following phrase, because they will need it for the rest of their lives, "Do you want fries with that?"

I didn't read the article the headline said it all! Actually the headline itself was just dumb. "coconut creek strives for turn around" what the hell are they supposed to do.. let it go? Ig nore the F? However like all older schools in Broward County Coconut Creek does not get the same funding as or equipment as a new school. That doesn't mean the students still can't learn they just have to try harder. And I can't really blame them for not trying when no one cares if they do or not.

I think it's foolish to pinpoint any one group or practice as being the reason for the F grade at Coconut Creek High School. It is a combination of all that was described, each one impacting the other until it becomes a total mess. I will say that one also has to look at the "feeder" schools. What's going on in these programs? What are their grades? It is unfortunate too that the sad fact of the matter is that low parent involvement and "concern" is higher in the populations that this school serves. And to make matters worse, those parents who do want to be involved have been treated as a "problem" by the administration of that school. I know. My son attended there and graduated in 2005. Most of our experiences were "negative."

You an all of the other losers don't know what "diverse" means. The school is well over 80% black. That's not diverse. You are an extra special loser because you "left" to someplace that apparently has no poor, mostly black public schools? I live 20 miles from that school and all of the schools around here actually ARE diverse (yeah, like no ethnic majority) but are fine. Why? The parents around here care more.

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Pisces

You should have a lucky break today when fate steps in and takes a hand. For instance, a situation may seem to be heading for disaster when you're suddenly bailed out in ways you would never have imagined. However, this doesn't mean you can take foolish risks in the hope that things will work out all right because there's no guaranteeing that they'll do so automatically.
