It seems very strange that they would both fall in the river while attempting to dock...........very tragic.

Once again I wish Sentinel reporters would be a little more aggressive in fact-finding, rather than just report, "Records show that..." Don't you guys have phones?
For example, was it a sailboat? A houseboat? Pontoon? Was weather a factor? Why is the husband in critical condition? Drowning? Other injury? Who rescued him? Did someone call 911? Was anyone around?

My sympathies to the husband and family for a tragic turn of events...
However, if I were a mystery writer, I might put together something about how the husband arranged to "bump" the dock in order to conceal the wife's earlier death -- him being in critical condition would represent misjudging the "bump" or unexpectedly getting tangled up somehow when he jumps in to "rescue" her.
Given the lack of "real" information about the situation, you'll just have to excuse the "free-association" sequence of "what might have been"...

they're my family too. I'm sad for Tommy Jr and Mary Ann. What a tragic loss! What love he had for his wife.

. Neighbors said they were both were experienced boaters. Experienced does not mean wise, nor does it mean safe. There are experienced boaters out there (obviously, now) whose habits are not safe despite their years spent on boats. People just refuse to learn from the experience of others. They think that what happens to others cannot ever happen to them. That's why people like this couple can read of drownings of OTHER people but not take home the lesson, "Maybe WE should wear PFDs so that tragedy doesn't happen to US." Everyone's too cool for school, you know?

You are asking for about 3000% more than the Sun-Sentinel appears qualified to deliver, my friend.

You'd be a really sucky mystery writer. Don't you know by now that a person cannot be faked to appear to have drowned? They can tell the difference between a body that had sucked in water to cause death versus a body that was thrown into water already having ceased to breathe. Duh.

Velma wrote: How can "experienced boaters" not wear life jackets ??? Just like I said: experience does not equal wisdom. For lots of people, "experience" results in complacency and egotism that cause them to forsake precautions. In short, they think they have become "too good" for anything bad to happen to them. They're too strong a swimmer, too skilled a boater. Flotation vests are for neophytes, right? For those who aren't self-assured because of their "experience."
