As one of the past 'workers' and former board member I have to say that "sold" is not a good word to hear...I am sure Jean is tired but she has 'shot herself in the foot' more than once by being so totally controling. While I too believe that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself..there are times when taking 'second best' is necessary for the greater good.

Okay. Stopped by ARM Thrift Store just now to get a mattress pad to cut up for puppy pads. There were 2 ladies there I hadn't seen before. I asked them if they had heard any rumors or anything about the shelter being sold. They hadn't, but you can bet Jean has gotten a phone call by now!
They also volunteered the information that the previous "caretakers" had left the place a total mess.

Not suprised about the condition of the facility...

Nice to see a place for kittens, but Alamogordo has one of the worst animal shelters in the state.

You beat me to it Barb! Animal Control is ruled and regulated by the city and is part of DPS. They must follow the rules as much as they hate it. Perfect case in point: the 2 puppies I am now bottle-feeding. Their mom is a purebred Rottie who was surrendered to AC following a domestic disturbance of some sort in which they were forced to give up their animals because they had no place to keep them. According to the CITY rules, an owner impound only has to be kept 24 hrs. before being euthanized. I believe they were kept longer, with one dog being adopted and the Rottie then gave birth there on Oct. 30 to the 2 pups. Nobody would adopt both her and the pups. No foster home could be found for both her and the pups. AC had already kept her beyond her allowed time and was not permitted to keep her and the pups until they were old enough to be separated. And the staff there all have overburdened themselves and their families with rescues. The only Rottie rescue that would take her refused to take the pups! The only - and last - resort was to separate them so that they all could live. So at five days the pups were taken from their very sweet and loving momma. Believe me, none of the people there were happy about it - but at least now they all have homes. Animal Control's staff does what they can (and sometimes more) within the limits of what they are REGULATED. We NEED a SHELTER. We don't have one. We do have a network of many many people who do what they can to help save animals. Some are 501's that get SOME grants and funding. Some of us do it out of our own pockets with ocassional donations. There are those who try to educate people about spaying/neutering, the harm of chaining, etc. etc. Some of us thought we were getting a shelter. When I was involved in raising funds for it, using it just for the pets of those who passed away was not mentioned that I recall at all. Doesn't matter, because it's not functioning now for whatever reason anyway. Before I get down from my soapbox and get another cup of much needed coffee, I would like to thank those who have supported both public and private rescues in whatever way they have. Special thanks to PetSense for the discounts on puppy formula and Blue Sky Veterinary for the discounted charges on my rescues!

Bit getting a dog or cat into a forever home is worth it. The rescues I have had in the last year or 2 did not even get to AC...A shelter IS sorely needed... The 'purpose' of the hoped for shelter was discussed wen meetings where still 'public'...at least I remember hearing that story after I go out here...rescues where to be helped when there was room.NO CATS at first...later it was discussed that a cat room/building would be built as donations allowed.

Off Topic (Slightly). I have a kitten, rescued was from feral momma, had an eye infection. Has been treated for it, but she may be blind in the eye, it has visible scarring, and I'm unsure if the infection damaged hearing, because at times she doesn't respond to a noise that is low. Kitty City isn't accepting new rescues, I refuse to take her to the pound, and I'd like to find her a good home (good=knows animals aren't disposable with convenience, knows they like sleeping under the covers as much as you do, knows they should be spaid and neutered, and knows that she deserves to be an indoor cat because she won't fair well in a battle versus a car tire) I have made some attempts, but haven't really gotten anywhere. I'm not giving her to a home that won't treat her as a permanent family member. How on earth do I find a home like this? It seems like so many people in this town don't vaccinate, spay/neuter, take the time to put ID on their dogs, and throw them away becuase they are viewed as disposable, or are "forced to take them to the pound". There are very few circumstances in which one is forced, and moving into a new apartment with a strict landlord isn't one of them.

I have placed kittens in homes that seemed ok but always with a 'return policy'. That is why I now have 6 and know people who have ended up with lots more...good luck...BTW I saved one from animal control that had such a bad infection that he lost an eye...he is a big fluffy trouble maker now!

I also have a blind kitty - and he does amazingly well! He was the only survivor from a rescued litter of 5 sick 2-week old kittens, and the runt. He had already lost one eye to the infection and the other is all clouded over. But he rules the roost here! Posting at the library is another idea - take your poster to the front desk and after it's approved they will put it up on the board in the front lobby. Have had some good results with that. If you give your contact information to Miss Ami in the childrens room, she can give it to me and I'll see what I can do to help find a home, too.

I used to volunteer at ARM. I myself "wondered" where the money was going. How can Jean hold 2 positions on the board? Plus the board doesn't even have the required number of people. How/why does she get away with this. Due to issues with the couple living on the sanctuary site and Jeans not wanting any "suggestions", to help run it, they left. Such a pitty. We have lost the main focus..helping save animals. Many pet lives could've been rescued by now. I would think twice before donating anything to this "orginization". I have met many wonderful people who rescue sick/homeless animals. God bless you for your efforts !
