Best player ever to play in LPD was Reecee Gravely he threw his talent away and never worked hard. Hardest worker would be tie between Thomas Jones and Justin Hamilton. Best Coach who did more with least had to be Tom Tuner. Robbins was a great coach but had tons of talent. Ralph Cummings forgot more about the game than anyone.

No way its Reese Gravley or Justin Hamilton, if you put your "biases" aside, there is a simple clear cut answer. Top coach is Phil and top player is Thomas Jones. Thomas' hs, college, and pro career is unmatched by anyone in LPD history. That one is not even close. As far as coach, I agree it's a much closer race between Phil and Tom and Ralph. Still Tom and Ralph's resume' doesn't match up to Phil's with more wins (306), more district/region, and 7 state titles along with 1 runner up. He also has a national coach of the year (2004) for football to add and is highest all time in track wins and two state titles. However, Mack Shupe should also be included in this argument for baseball, but I don't know his resume. Also the girls tennis coach at JJK, just sayin'

Good comment about Mack Shupe. If we are going with other sports, Coach Howard Deel from Clintwood and Burrell Paye from PV need to be mentioned.

please. Robbins won more games. Thomas Jones has close to 11,000 yards in the NFL. End of story. Ed Clark never played a down in the NFL.

Tom Turner/Ed Clark! Tom Turner was more than just a coach on the field, he was always there for the kids, especially the "under dogs". He made some great football players out of kids that others would never have given a chance.

Heard that Turner missed ALOT of school, showed up when he wanted and some other interesting stories about him. Does that make for the best coach of all time in the LPD? Don't know what's true for sure. I know about the great football teams and Appalachia pride that he kept alive. He apparently had the charisma that people associate with "DAWG" football and that brought out the Appy people for the Friday night games. Haven't heard much about him leaving a lasting impression on many, in caring about his players as "people" first, then as players second. Heard that Riggss was just the opposite, left a great positive lasting impression and made a positive impact on many, including those who never played for him. Met Coach Riggs one time and he seemed to have the "IT" factor that I heard so much about. Coach Robbins had a great record, etc.offended many.
