What are two things you would like the new council to accomplish before the new year. My 2 are small and should be very easy to get them started off on the right foot. 1.) Stop people from putting their garbage in the street. 2.) Stop people from blowing/raking their leaves into big piles in the street. I don't know how many times I have seen a yard waste bag destroyed because it was placed in the street and driven over creating a nice little mess. The leaves thing seems to be new at least to me. Could be the same offenders. Discounting the image factor and the mess they leave in the street when destroyed by cars or people they also end up plugging up the drains for the sewers. I know these are code enforcement issues but it is time to start getting things done. We can't even get them to stop the idiots from storing their boats in their driveways for the winter. I love the boat on Elizabeth being stored on cinder blocks BTW. What again do these employee return to us the taxpayers again?

Mine are 1) Pick a new City Manager that has both education and experience with a proven track record to run our city. 2) Change the tone down at City Hall so that all who work for the city understand that us residents are the customer not the companies this city has contracts with. Residends are treated like second class citizens now.

I agree no more the trash in the streets bothers me as well. As for the leaves in the street most other cities collect leaves at the curb as a service to the residents, the Grosse Pointe's HW, and Royal Oak are a few the come to mind. With the money saved from the WM contract this could probably be accomplished here as well. Hopefully a competent Manager and a new head of DPW could work this out. What I would like to see accomplished by New Years is a legitimate policy for snow removal, this way the residents will not be nailed for driveby snow removal like last year. Also the ethics clause that the new council members favor, I would like to see this enacted quickly.

SCS is behind the times with regard to leaves.....just about every other city in the area vacuums the leaves at the curb. They don't have problems with clogs drains. The top two priorities should be hiring a PROFESSIONAL city manager, and ridding the city of previous incompetent nepotism type and "good ole boy" hires.......starting with code enforcement

Looks like people want more service and less taxes to pay for the service. That will not work.

Not one of the previous replies stated anything about less tax. Yes, we would like more services for the taxes we pay. The past few years of no-bid contracts and frivolous unnecessary purchases by incompetent department heads has resulted in the current backlash of the residents. The $240,000 the city spent last year on a salt brine sprayer for the roads could have easily covered the expense of curbside leaf collection. The city owns a "weed harvester" for the lake that has never worked. Totally unqualified individuals are department heads that try to learn their position at our taxpaying expense. The three most flagarant are Ken, Sandy, Curt and Mary Jane. Look to the south of the city and you see Grosse Pointe, SCS had every opportunity to look and act like our neighbor, but poor decisions by greedy self serving individuals over the years has resulted in what we have. Look at the Shores Theatre, you know the one that use to be open..it has been vacant for 3 years and is now for sale...all because of a council members refusal to grant a change in six parking spaces. Ever think of the impact on the area if the theatre had expanded? Funny too that the same councilmen who voted against expansion of that business owns a blighted home that is in violation of many of the codes he fights for... Drive down Jefferson or Harper and do you notice half of all storefronts are vacant. It is because business owners don't need to fight the city to locate here. The can go elsewhere for a lot less hassle. Fewer business' means fewer taxes, just watch the last council meeting, a resident is harassed by the police over an illegal political sign....cops show up to that incident, yet all day long you can watch cars speed down any major street with no consequences, why? because in this city we only have one traffic patrol car covering the entire city and I-94 at any given time. Enforcement of the posted speed limits and overnight on-street parking would generate cash flow for the department. Just wait in two years we will have the renewal of the millage for Police and Fire, funny how they tell us it's for our safety, yet the funds go into the cities general fund to pay for pensions for retired personnel. I could go on and on...WWKT1 pissed me off with his comment, sorry for hijacking the thread. Gerald Sinclair 4th generation resident

I would love to see what our city gets from paying her 70K a year. I bet it would be close to nothing. This is an issue that needs alot of attention.

No, there is no need for more tax dollars to get the city to do what it is suppose to do on its current budget. You want more money to pay for services then stop sending the code enforcement assistant to conferences in Lansing using a city owned vehicle because hers broke down. Common sense can go a long when people in charge actually have some.
