Phenix City is seriously hindered in terms of Internet speeds...

With the BOOM of streaming large file HD movies (netflix, youtube, etc...), online gaming and large content websites, Phenix City is seriously handicapped.

The only options Phenix City residents have in terms of internet speeds are:

6.0 DSL from AT&T (Which NEVER reaches 6.0 btw)@$50.00 a month and
6.0 Cable internet from Cable TV of East Alabama, which has the WORST review rating of any cable company ever in the existence of cable companies -- worldwide. Their price is $50 + the TV package you HAVE to buy together -which also sucks.

Seriously. These are the ONLY two options to have in our high bandwith oriented society?

Columbus has:
-MediaCom (not a very big name in the industry) and their BASIC package is 12MBs! WTF. Then their upgraded package is 50MBS!!!! WTFFF. And these packages are roughly the SAME PRICE as phenix city's options @ 6.0MBS!!!!! seriously f****ed up stuff here.

-Charter. Freaking 15, 30 and 100MBs for roughly the same freaking price again. Its rediculous.

We are paying the same price for SH*TTY, unreliable internet speeds that our 100MB neighbors in Columbus -- not even a friggin mile away-- are paying for.

I understand DSL cant break through these barriers. But Cable has the power to do so. Cable TV of East Alabama SUCKS so bad they can't even provide anything better SO HOW ARE THEY THE ONLY CABLE TV COMPANY in PHENIX CITY? Why does the city council (or whatever powers that be) allow this to proceed? This is a HUGE deterrent to those who live here or want to live here in the future.

It seems Cable TV of east alabama has no intention of expanding their services, and for some crazy reason Phenix City is fine with it? It seems like since CATVEA has been with the city so long, phenix city feels like it owes it to them to not let competitors in? I mean that's the only explanation I can come up with of why they won't let the residents of the city have any options.

Trust me, I am already planning on moving back to Columbus.

Our society is going forward, and high speed broadband is a must. Phenix city will be left behind if they dont do something right now. This is a damn shame of a city.

Do not apologize for the rant. Thats about all most of us do here anyway. You are not alone in your frustration.
You must be renting in phenix city as no one in their right mind would sell a home in todays market in order to move over here to columbus, ga. High-speed broadband is not a must it is a luxury just like free enterprise and having an option to choose your provider would be on that side of the river. To put it simply, the city and county officials on the westside of the river are willing to talk-up the beauty of free enterprise but only when it benifits their pocket-books and a few people who own them.

Mr Snyder. Yes, high-speed broadband is a luxury. However, it is an equivalent luxury to Air condition or powered windows.

Can a car work without them? Yup. But would you buy a car without those features? Nope.

So Phenix city's air conditioning(internet), and powered windows are both hardly cool, and very slow (slow speeds).

The officials need to understand, that having limited options for HIGHLY SOUGHT after "luxuries" like fast internet, is doing more damage than good concerning new homebuyers. My friends and I have done our part to inform those interested to live here through word of mouth about the lackluster options, and hopefully have prevented them from living here. Its a disgusting situation, that I see no solution in the near future.

Seriously, I can understand if we were a very small city, far far away from columbus, with a population that wouldn't warrant high speeds. But FFS we are the tricity area. Phenix city is home to soldiers all across the world due to fort benning. I dont know what else to say.

Now you listen here you smart little whipper snapper. When I was a kid 6.0 MBS was so fast our computers would catch on fire and as far as I and all of the other Phenixicixixins are concerned its darn well fast enough now.
The only people who need more than 6.0 MBS are terrorists and pirates anyway.

My cousin Larry Mondelo liked to create ZINES in high school. He called them ZYNES. He mixed brillant colours like PETER MAX and swirled them on the paper before printing. They were all hand set block press.
