Is the chamber a waste of money or is it worth while?

It is a great investment for any business you have. It's a great way of networking and getting your business out there. Small investment for a great overall accomplishment.

Many people in the area think it's a total waste of time and money. They feel like it does nothing to improve the economy or the way of life in the Alleghany Highlands.

Not only the chamber is a waste, but how bout economic development. What jobs have been created in the last five years? None that I know of. There will be no progress in this community until the power hungry people that only take positions for prestige are replaced by people that really care.

How much taxpayer money was wasted on the new Chamber office? By the looks of it, too damn much. It's also for tourism. What Tourism? How many times can a person look at Humpback Bridge?

Woops, I see I stepped on one of the ELITE'S toes. I'll tell you why this area is the way it is. It's because people like you are only looking out for yourself. You guy's are scared to death that someone else or a business will come into the area and knock you off you're throne and you won't be the BIGSHOT you once were. Well, I got news for you. None of you guy's are the Bigshots you think you are. In fact, most people have no respect for you guy's what so ever.

Listen asshats... I am NOT a bigshot, and you aren't stepping on "elite's toes" and I support ANY AND EVERY DAMN business that comes in this town. Don't judge me when you don't know me! You know me by 2 comments? WTF? You don't have to be "elite" to be in the Chamber. Just own a business... whether it have a store or out of your home.. Research things before you get "diarrhea of the mouth" so to say. I have a thrown hunny and if you think you are big enough, knock me off it, but I can bet you you aren't. You probably are just some lonely scuzz that doesn't have a life, so therefore you run your chops about any and everything you can on the computer like you are some hoitey toitey yanky ignoramous'! FED UP... get a life and visit the local Adult Novelty store for all your built up frustrations, and I am sure curious wouldn't mind "backing you up" on the ordeal. Grow up people! Get lives and live them. Don't worry about everyone else's lives. That's probably why ya if ya have a pot to pee in, you don't own it! You just "ass"sumed and made a TOTAL "ass" out of yourselves. People laugh at people like YOU! Don't hate!

Well, I see I hit a nerve with the member. I would support any business in the area if we had one. But, I have to go to Roanoke, Lexington or Lewisburg to spend my money. I can remember back in the 60's and 70's when Alleghany County was booming. On Saturday's it was hard to find a parking spot on Main Street. But those days are long gone. I ask you member, what happened to those booming times and will they ever return? My guess is no. As far as my built up frustrations, I have none and I definatly don't need to go to a porno business to release them. That business will be history before we Know it. As far as a pot to pee in, I have three of them and all three are paid for. I just don't have the need to be in the limelight everytime I turn around like alot of people in this community.

You didn't hit a nerve, you just ran your mouth to the wrong one. And if it's so bad around here, go live somewhere else. And the "booming times" as you call it would come if our local governments would work together instead of against one another. And her business isn't a porno business, it's an Adult novelty store, and she isn't going to go anywhere. She surely isn't in debt by any means, and her business is BOOMING! Of course you have three, lol, you are making yourself look like gold on the internet. Anyone can do that. I can say I own a mansion in Mississippi with BMV's and mercedes. But just like I said, if you don't like it here, then leave or try to make it better instead of pissin' and moanin' about it. Don't blame the chamber on how our economy is, you better blame your concil men and women and the board of supervisors. If you want to make change then quit belly achin' over the computer and go out and try to help the citizens that are trying to make it better around here. If you don't then, STFU about it and move on.

When I started this, my intentions were to find out what the people felt about the chamber. I wanted to know if it was worth the money that the taxpayers were putting into it and if they thought the chamber was creating results. Many people in this area feel like it is not. Neither is economic development. Member you are correct that the local governments need to work together, but I really think it's never going to happen. For that to work someone is going to have to give up some power and that's not going to happen. I do think local governments need to start trimming the fat and put money where it is needed the most. With local revenues and the population dropping every year the money will eventually run out. Our schools are already struggling to make they're buggets due to lack of funds and it won't be long before something else will come up short. Don't you think it would have been wiser to spend money on our schools instead of a new Chamber office? I for one think so.

How much taxpayer money was spent on the new Chamber offices? My understanding is that they applied to the Alleghany Foundation and received a grant to pay for it. Is that not correct?
