In that price range, you'll do well in the North Main area. McDaniel/Crescent are probably higher than that, unless you find a real fixer.
try ggar dot com its a local real estate site, and you can search by neighborhood, price range, etc.(Try selecting "north main" or "alta vista" or "augusta road" as your subdivision)

I've been checking out the Greenville real estate sites and getting very depressed!!! It seems like Greenville is just like Sarasota in that if you want to live in an old two story in a historic neighborhood near downtown, it's going to cost you big bucks!!! I thought home prices were better in Greenville! Oh well, at the least the cost of living is a little less there!

Thanks Gryphon! We'll really be able to see what's what when we actually go to Greenville, which hopefully is in the next couple of weeks! Looking forward to visiting - it seems like such a neat place with the cool downtown area and all of the parks! Sarasota is sadly lacking in any kind of green areas/parks (unless you like being in the parks with alligators in them!!) because all of the attention is on the beaches (which we never cared about despite having grown up here!) We really like the mountains and green areas better!
Thanks again for the advice!

McDaniel and Crescent Ave are very expensive but there are streets which are very beautiful in that area where the houses are less expensive. This is such a nice area it's worth a look.

Thanks!(I don't know how Crossville TN came up as my town! That's strange!) Anyways, thanks for everyone's advice - it's difficult when you can only see homes on the internet!(It's cool having Google Earth though! That helps a little!) Does anyone know about the Augusta Road area, like Elsie Ave and Conastee? Is this a nice area?

I would be happy to help anyone planning to move into Greenville or Spartanburg County. I recently assisted one of my clients in structuring a deal to purchase a beautiful home in Lyman, SC (a very small town in Spartanburg County).

Some of you "relocators" might consider Charlotte, NC as well. It is a city that has a lot to offer and is @ 1.5 hours from Greenville, SC. I have included my email address below for anyone who is interested or in need of a Real Estate Broker.

I live in North Atlanta and just bought one of those condos being built in the north main area called The Edge. It will be ready in March or April. I can't wait to get out of Atlanta! I love the idea of being able to hop on the free trolley, walk or ride a bike to places like the Peace Center, the Bi-Low auditorium and hear world class entertainment. The parks are fantastic, especially the Falls. People are friendly, major medical hospitals are downtown and the restaurants are great! And the climate is pretty good too...short rather mild winters with close proximity to mountains, lakes and even skiing in winter.

Oh, and about rednecks. I'm originally from Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio. There were lots of "rednecks" there. Where ever you have people, you'll find the red variety. The south does not have a corner on that market! Greenville has a well educated population and is essentially a college town since Clemson University and Furman are practically right in the center of it (well, kind of).

Hello people! My husband and I are thinking of moving to SC. We live in Rhode Island, he is from Colombia and I have lived in RI for over 30 years. What are the main industries in Greenville and where are the safest areas to live? Thanks for your help.
I moved back to S.C. after traipsing around the globe. Upstate has many little communities around Greenville-Spartanburg area that has much to offer for families. Great places to raise kids. And because of the major colleges like Clemson and USC, quite an international community has developed along with a vibrant arts and cultural atmosphere.

One really needs to have an open mind when they are planning or wanting to relocate, I have live in NY, Fla, Ga and my home town is Greenville, SC. the old saying "there is no place like home" is absolutely true. Dorothy knew what she was talking about..... lol. I live in s. Ga and I miss my home town, I have been in S. Ga 25 years. Every where you go, there are lots of problems, no matter what state, no one is exactly the same, so who ever puts down Greenveille look at your town. rather it be the goverment/sheriff who is corupt or too many blacks in town, it is all aover the wprld. so put a lid on it....

My husband & I visited Greenville and Spartanburg last fall. Met a real estate agent from both counties & saw lots of homes. We have no children, but are interested in help on which county to live in for tax reasons, land to garden and accessibility to jobs. Any ideas. This May I will make a return trip to look for employment. Do you get hired full-time here or is there something called contract-to-hire before full time?

We lived in Greenville... well really Greer for 5 yrs. We really loved it. Since then we have lived in Austin, CA and PA.
Kids went to Pelham Rd school. Great school. Really miss Greenville/ Greer.
It's just like everywhere else...there is always a couple of "bad apples" in the bunch.
One more thing....Greenville is the only city that our "new" neighbors came to introduce themself when they saw the movers unloading the truck! Very nice city indeed!!

Moving to the area this summer -- any suggestions on builders to stay away from besides the now bankrupt Poinsetta? Any nightlife -- What about the Travelers Rest area.

Monica -- I think Columbia is at least a two hour drive.
