That is why you wear a harness when hunting from a tree stand...

There's at least one every year.

I hunt deer, but I never felt the need to climb a tree. And I get my deer every season. Oh, and I'm a bow hunter.

Time to ban tree stands, these things are dangerous. Wonder if Hillary will toss that in the gun ban.
But then again, I'm sure the gun banners enjoy anything that kills a legal gun owner. So she'll probably pass a law saying if their too close to the ground its unfair to the deer and demand they be at least 50 ft up in the trees ensuring death to any gun owner who falls.

This unfortunate accident could have been prevented if he had only worn a harness. Wearing a harness while climbing in and out of a treestand may be a pain but it beats the alternative. For those that don't hunt and made the derogatory comments, I feel sorry for you and your misunderstanding. The over population of deer costs millions of dollars of property damage across the nation. There are no natural predators, except for hunters. The next time you hit a deer in your car, think about the man that died who couldn't defend himself from your stupid comments.

Don't blame the hunters for the fact that deer don't have natural predators, blame mass urbanization. Yes, man is the main culprit, but not the hunter. There is no land to sustain a habitat. Farmers leave no buffer zones, cities grow larger and large with no green zones. Hunters do more to preserve natural habitat than the ordinary citizen. The hunting equipment we purchase is taxed and pays for habitat and wildlife restoration. What did you do to help?

Seriously, what options do we have? The Native Americans get the casinos. The farmers get subsidies. What do we get? Listen pal...it ain't easy being a deer. Salt blocks, tree stands, high powered scopes...give me a break.

Funny how people who don't hunt or fish but yet enjoy our state and federal parks do so on the backs of hunters and fisherman but yet ridicule us is in the process.

Couldn't have said it better. Perhaps the non-hunting public should read up on the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937. This puts your statement into perspective.

If it wasn't for hunters, there would be little game left in the US. Hunters and fishermen are the main revenue source for the protection of habitat. Support DU !

I am proud of the thoughful, intelligent replies posted by the hunters who replied to this story. I am ashamed of the inhumaity of those who made light of this unfortunate man's death.

It is true that some who go out to hunt ONLY during deer season do not always represent what the heritage of hunting should be, and yes, some of them drink. For each one of those, there are many more who do not, and who conduct themselves in an honorable manner. Stop looking down your short-sighted noses and lumping all outdoorsmen into the same group.

You can buy your meat on a styrofoam plastic-wrapped tray at the supermarket and disassociate yourself from reality, if you like. I, for one, would rather eat meat from an animal that has run wild and free its entire life, than to eat meat from an animal that has lived its life confined to an enclosed chicken "factory" or a filthy feed lot.

For those who think it's wrong to eat meat, well, I guess you have your reasons. Personally, I don't get it. We all are a part of the food chain. Get over it.

The guy who said we're harming the animals more by paving over their habitat is right. Just how many more strip malls, highways, convenience stores and subdivisions do we really need? It's time to wake up. Once all of the green spaces are gone, they are gone...along with a lot of the animals.

Then I take it you're all for the re-establishment of wolf and cougar populations in the Midwest.

Oh how valiant the great white hunter is (ya, I dont know/care what color you are, its just the moniker)... killing off the buffalo to near extinction. Killing off the wolf, coyote (varmint), the list goes on and on.

While I do agree that hunting groups like Ducks Unlimited (what a misnomer that is) do form large entities to acquire and help maintain habitats for game life, and I do agree that mass expansion into mother nature's backyard, hunting for sport is just pure stupid.

I laugh at the people who purchase property in the foothills (namely overpopulated CA)... and then whine about the wildlife encroaching.

Time for mother nature to reclaim this planet.

Thats right numbnutz. The state and federal parks are there to satisfy the hunter and fisherdood.

hey grandma- don't you mean "this man's unfortunate death"? Unless of course, you know the poor chap, in which case, you may know that he was indeed an unfortunate man.

As for the rest of your comments, I will leave that to the philosophical debate of the man's responsibility to manage God's dominion, including the animals. Personally, I think 'man' has screwed things up every chance HE gets.

I am fine with re-establishing wolves and cougars to the midwest. Why would I be against that. I am pro environment and pro habitat. I did not kill all the buffalo, I didn't make any creature extinct. I have purchased land and have let it return to a natural state. I have provided habitat to quail, turkey, deer and other creatures. My family practices eco-friendly farming, no chemicals, fertilizer, or tilling. I ask what have you done to help the environment? Until the wolves and the cougars return, who is going to keep the deer population in check? Or should we let them continue to die of starvation and disease?

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Scorpio

Your thoughts turn to the past today, putting you in a nostalgic mood. You're awash with sentimental tears as you dwell on days gone by or gaze at photos of people you'll never see again. However, try not to let this mood of reminiscence turn into a tendency to feel sorry for yourself and therefore to demand special treatment from others.
