Are they shut down ?
|
No they are not, but THANKS TO OBAMA, they will be. People here in Clay, more particularly, West Virginia, should not re-elect him come November. Here the press release Consol Energy released to the newspapers on June 29th-------- PITTSBURGH, June 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/-- CONSOL Energy Inc.(CNX) has issued notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) of a layoff at its Fola Operations near Bickmore, West Virginia. It is expected that the layoffs will impact approximately 318 employees at the Fola complex and will occur during a 14-day period beginning at 12:01 a.m., on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Surface, reclamation, underground, and general office staff will be affected and were officially briefed on the situation yesterday and today. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120416/NE... ) CONSOL Energy expects 2012 production to be reduced by approximately 800,000 tons. To date in 2012, the Fola complex has produced 1.05 million tons of coal. Annual direct estimated economic impact of the Fola Complex is $165 million. CONSOL Energy attributed the idling of its Fola operations to a combination of market conditions and increasing pressure from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has resulted in both increased costs of surface mining and significant uncertainty for the company's power generation customers related to the continued use of Central Appalachian coal. "The decision to idle our Fola operations is a difficult one, but in an effort to manage our inventory and to balance coal production with expected utility demand and shipping schedules, we are faced with making adjustments which unfortunately will impact our workforce," said Nicholas J. DeIuliis, president. "The domestic market for coal remains soft due to weak economic growth and activity. The warm winter resulted in the growth of our utility customers' stockpiles and their inability to accept committed coal shipments. Additionally, the escalating costs and uncertainty generated by recently advanced EPA regulations and interpretations have created a challenging business climate for the entire coal industry." In the interim period between today and when the layoff takes effect, underground operations will continue, however, Fola surface employees will be reassigned from mining to reclamation work. The only coal to be mined on the surface will be coal incidental to reclamation. Following the initial 60-day period, mining will be idled at the underground operations. Reclamation will begin in areas not necessary to future operations and an undetermined number of employees will be retained to assist in those efforts. |

you seem to be as dumb as the reat of the people who think obama made it stay warm all winter that made stock piles at power plants remain stockup you should lose your job your most likey to dumb to read |
|
The lack of power that we had this past week is just a taste of what is coming without coal. The warm weather just played a small part in Fola's decision to shut the mine down. |

Judged: 1 the mine was bought for a tax writeoff and the act on clean coal was sign under bush not obama |

Judged: 1 1 1 Just saying this because it isn't only Obama causing this problem with the EPA, it is also due to big business driving the price of coal up and then idling mines when the price falls too far. There have been thousands and thousands of people laid off in the past 5-7 years across this country and hundreds of factories closed, and those people and their towns just dried up. Coal miners are just now getting hit VERY hard, but they aren't the only ones this has happened to. If you're finally sick enough of all of this, stop turning your heads to what is really going on....big business has been selling us out for many years and ALL presidential administrations for the past 20 years have helped them do it. Big business has taken over our government and they are all choking this economy for every penny they can get out of us! And it's perfectly legal because no one is standing up to them!!!!! |

If a company can not sell a product or coal why not lay off. losing money is not profit.
|

Labeling people for their opinions is wrong. I agree that Obama is strict with enforcing regulations, but why have them if you not going to enforce them. The coal industry has force fed us bullshit for years. Coal is killing a lot more than the environment. Coalfield residents have cancer and live in poverty. Once Consol shuts its doors life in Clay County will go on we don't need coal the coal industry needs us. |

Its not obamas fault that fola didnt clean the pits or pad the pits before backfilling. thats why the EPA is on them.the water will have to be treated for ever.

your missing a valuable point here , if Consol shuts down the county loses what taxes the county commissioners didnt give away . So your kids lose , the Board of Education will make cuts and it won't be the staff in the main office that gets cut first . They will start at the bottom and work their way up . You think the county is in dire straits now , watch and see what Linkonogger does after he sees there isn't any money flow . Fingers will start pointing at every one but himself . This is a domino effect , the effects wont stop there , there will be a great many effected by this more so than just the miners . The whole county will feel the effects in one way or another . If Consol has rule to follow then they need to follow them , they are making money hand over fist , all they have to do is what is right . Just go by the rules . That way everybody wins . Quit being so greedy .

Oh, what will happen to our elected officials in Clay when they have no coal severence tax to barter deals for their own self interests? I do agree the coal industry needs good qualified workers as does our country. The full affect of shutting down the coal industry hasn't taken place yet. Let's watch the lights go out in the White House and then maybe the industry will get a shot in the arm. |

If Consol isnt selling out then they can pay taxes on the coal reserves and what ever other holdings they happen to have . May as well get something out of ya . Sell coal pay taxes , sit on the coal pay taxes .
If ya dont want to pay on the reserve sell to someone who will . At one time is was said there was 20-25 years worth of coal reserves , hm gee that should add up to a good chunk for the county . |
