Lawsuit targets anonymous online comments

Hey,some things don't need to be put out on topix.Sorry to say I agree with the Judge. I wish they'ed do it here in Glasgow Ky.

people need to stop trying to harm people on here and imagine if they were the victim of such baseless attacks...freedom of speech has its limits...and some of these people have definitely crossed the line...in my humble and considered opinion...

gee wish i could sit on that jury trial. i thought all lawyers have no conscience, have no morals, have no thin skin and have no compation. lawyers are good at screwing others until they get screwed....ha ha ha ha. hope he loses in court.

I'm a Network Engineer, the information requested from Topix is Useless and will only Harm Topix and legitimate users.

If Topix retained IP information, and IF Topix were to turn over this information it would(or at least SHOULD) be useless in a court of law.

Currently I'm bouncing my IP through a number of proxy servers. The IP address collected by Topix(why would they collect it anyway??) would not belong to me(not that IP addresses leased from an ISP are specific to anyone)

The Ip information could lead them to my neighbors open wireless, the local LaQuinta INN, or Starcash coffee shop.

Some legitimate users WILL(I have already read some posts of people who are concerned) be harmed and Topix will bear the costs of providing this information and defending themselves against lawsuits by people who believe they have been harmed by this.

The bottom line is the Judge was foolish in issuing this order, and HAS caused more harm than any supposed good he Thinks it might have.

How will this work? What can happen?

IMHO-- The foolish ones were those that lied and slandered, while playing judge and jury.

All of this reminds me of a bumper sticker I once saw:
"Too bad ignorance isn't painful"

Since you are a network engineer Bob, you would know in rural parts of the country where many people are still on dial-up or cable, it's a lot easier to get ISPs. That's the case here. It's rural small town Texas, with cotton fields, farms, woods, cattle and wide open spaces. Many places you can't even get a cell phone signal. So who's to say the judge is foolish other than you?

I believe in and underdstand freedom of speech, but this was nothing you would like to have happened to you or your loved ones. I read bits and pieces and it was beyond belief, and I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. Some people are just plain mean, and Karma has a way of coming back to byte them on the azz. So....

Time will tell
