My son is also a 4th Classman (rat) @ VMI and in Marine ROTC. He said they just completed a 12 mile rifle march when cadet evans collapsed after entering barracks area. He was immediately worked on by trained EMT personel that our upperclassman. Cadet Evans was a gung ho cadet who expressed a lot of motivation in training according to my son. A sad day for VMI and a loss for our country as these cadets aspire to greatness.

If anyone reads any other articles about this day, know that this march was performed in the most professional way possible. There are things online about people claiming to have been there and witnessed hazing and degrading behavior the whole way, when in reality that's nothing but a lie. Everyone who was there from Evans' BR's to the Cadet Equality guys said nothing like that happened. There's no need to point fingers, and we should all just remember Brother Rat Evans' positive attitude towards the institute, his BR's and his country.

My son is also currently a rat @VMI. He is in Alpha Company and completed the same conditioning hike everyone is scrutinizing. My son said the hike was the same as the others except longer. They conducted the hike as it is supposed to be executed, with no deviations from the scheduled breaks, etc. It is a tough loss for his family and the institute. God bless cadet Evans and his family during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Evans family and all of Rat Evans friends. This is a tragic incident and just "one of those things" that happens and only God knows why. May you all find comfort in the memories that Cadet Evans left with each of you. God Bless you all.

Get everything out in the open so you can discuss it, otherwise you run the risk of harbouring resentments and grudges that will emerge further down the line.
