You should be getting something back if it's been that long, you would think with the funding coming in from the gaming they could hire more staff in the enrollement dept. We have heard they have be holding things bac kaccount of the Cherokee Freedmen that have be trying to enroll? You may find out in talking to people in your school, morethen likley you will find a few more Native Americans, Cherokee people have always find away to meet up with other Cherokees.
This weekend many of our Cherokee cousins find the way back to Tahlequah..... As far as others looking alike I take it you may be alittle short and round like most of us back here..(just kidding) |

we have been researching my husbands family his great grandfather has a roll number on the cherokee dawes roll. we would like to know how to go about getting a CDIB card for him if he qualifies and what needs to be done.

Go to www.cherokee.org
They tell you step by step what to do. Keep in mind that submitted birth certificates MUST be state certified b.c. Complementary hospital birth certificates will not do, nor will County ones. Texas and Calif. both issues b.c.'s by county but you can get one issued by the state. |

Here is the Cherokee Nation info site. Please read it carefully before wasting your time on trying to get a CDIB. My g-grandfather lived in Flint District, Cherokee Nation in the 1880s. He removed his family to Tennessee and gave up his rights per the Cherokee Constitution. So therefore am not eligible.
I descend from the Ward family, John and Kakty McDaniel. http://www.cherokee.org/Services/145/Page/def... |

Should be John and Catherine (Katy) McDaniel Ward in previous comment.

Okiedokey is right as far as step by step, and in order to become a member ofthe tribe ( Cherokee Nation or Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma a perosn has to have someon listed that was on the Dawes roll, until that is every chance. May cherokee ddin't enrolled accout living outside the C.N. or for other reason. And back in 1975 C.N.O. agree to go with the Dawes to become a Fed. tribe... This hurt many Cherokee's...
Their is alot of trouble going on with cherokees that were not being allowed as members over this ,and alot of State Cherokee tribes or groups have formed. Myself I think if a person has the paper work, the C.N. should look at it and have a board decide. Account I know we have Cherokees that were left out in the cold, and account what the C.N. agree on was wrong.... They should look at the Miller roll, also. |

I am so sorry for not getting back to you sooner... I have been keeping busy lately. We finally did all get our cards and just wanted to thank you for your help. I just wished that we could have proven more blood on my fathers side...for my future grandchildrens sake. Im not sure if I will ever be able to prove my bio fathers side since he is deceased. But I am very happy with the results. And yes I cant wait to be able to Bring my mother back home to Tahlequah!! Maybe next year if our jobs permit it. Thanks again!!! |

Hi, I am somewhat cherokee. I have enough to have a CDIB card. I am in the middle of a nasty divorce. We have two children ages 3 and 2. I am the only one with a CDIB card. The children and I live in Okc, Ok. My ex is trying to use my CDIB as a means of control and to get out of paying child support and such. He actually has gotten it through court stuff, with the help of his lawyer who believes whatever he says.
He and she both believe I can use to card here in Okc for housing, day care, that going to IHS for the kids medical should be easy. And he is trying to get it court ordered that I provide him with a copy of my CDIB card. I don't think this is legal. Does anyone know? Also I am thinking of going through the tribe for possible legal help since this divorce is dragging on forever. His lawyer is his ex girl friend and is free. And well I have hired an entire firm. No...none of my family lives in Oklahoma. They actually moved to Delaware or many stayed in South Carolina. I doubt anyone was on the rolls. The only names that I can give is a Mary Jane McCray (I dont know her maiden name) and her mother's name was Alice. |

Guess you have and can always say yuor Cherokee or Native Ameircan at heart. Not a thing wrong with that and many cannot prove they are Native American by blood, but have had things passed down and know their history of their people.

I wish I had more info to give...maybe someoone further down the line was on the rolls but i dont have that info :( |

My Daddy told me all his life, that he had alot of Cherokee in him. Even when he was in the Navy, not only did he get a tatoo of an anchor on his arm, but also one of a Cherokee Indian, and I remember it, to this day. I have absolutely no idea if he and/or his parents were card carrying indians, but I would sure like to find out. I have absolutely no idea where to even start. Perhaps someone could help me on this. He lived in Danville, Arkansas, where he was born, and also in El Paso, and Odessa, Texas. His name was Francis Odell Norris. He passed away at the age of 55. I live in the Oklahoma City, OK, area. If you can help, please email me at OKSunshine050@aol.com Thanks so much!~Lesta

My Grandmother (Pearl Carol Bryant) was full blooded Cherokee. Her parents were of those Cherokee that remained in the East(refused the treaty & trail of tears). My Grandmother's parents were killed when she was about 8yrs old (roughly 1919-1922), and she and her sister were adopted shortly there after.
I am having tremendous trouble in finding what the family name was prior to adoption...and now I'm wondering if I am just chasing shadows. Is there any reason I should continue with the effort? Meaning, would the family even show up on any registrations or record for me to verify I'm a Lineal Descendant? |

Many people in the same boat, Cherokee blood or of Native American blood, but cannot become a member of the tribe account of what happen over the years being force to move and by the United States govt.
If you know who you our know one can take this away from you. Many other Cherokee's have formed their own tribe account of just this. Just because you and others cannot belong to one of the fed. tribes does not make you any less Cherokee. Cherokee Nation leaders in the 70s made a deal with the United States BIA to only use one roll ( Dawes ) had they use the others many more could had been members of the tribe. |
