Claremont on CNN

I just saw where they interviewed the principal at Claremont Elementary School about President Obama talking to the students in America tomorrow and what an embarrassment for North Carolina. All of you people who think their kids are going to be brain washed are just crazy. It makes you look like a bunch of hicks or rednecks. Oh, I know it would be just awful for the president to tell your kids to do their best in school and that they need to stay in school - that would be just awful. How dare the president try to tell your child to stay in school? What a joke? A lot of these kids do not have someone at home to tell them that they need to do their best and stay in school and they still will not because of a bunch of rednecks.

Let me get this straight...they interviewed Mr. Chris Gibbs (Claremont Elem principal) on CNN and you're saying he is an embarrassment to N.C.?? What did he say that was so embarrassing?

No, Chris Gibbs was not an embarassment, but the community who pushed for it to not be shown in school are an embarrassment. I felt like Mr. Gibbs was just doing this because of the crazy parents that send their kids to Claremont Elementary. These parents think that it is bad for our president to talk to our kids about doing their best and staying in school. They think he is going to be pushing his agenda, like these kids can vote. What a joke? It just makes the community look like some back woods town that doesn't know any better. How dare the president talk to your precious child in a positive way? What a joke? A lot of these kids will never get a positive message at home and now they still will not.

Chris Gibbs... you're a joke... for letting a bunch of corny rednecks jerk you around.

North Carolina... you're a joke for being so stupid as to resort to bandwagon to strong-arm a principal into depriving students of a valuable message in their education.

It's no wonder NC has one of the worst education systems and highest dropout rates in the country. Parents should know better.

You "non-rednecks" are severely misinformed! Mr. Gibbs did not make that decision because people didn't want the President talking to their kids. If you think that was it, then you all are a bunch of idiots! He made the decision because we are continually adding to the demands we place on school-aged children. There is a VERY limited amount of instructional time as it is with the increased amount of required testing. This 1 hour speech would detract many more hours from the instructional time this week and who knows for how much longer? Our children are continuously drilled as to how important their education is and the importance of staying in school. A lot of younger elementary aged children don't even know what a President is, let alone, who he is or why. Having a man on TV in a suit tell them to stay in school isn't any more beneficial than anyone at the school tell them. Mr. Gibbs made a competent decision for the welfare of his students' educational day. Not for any other reason. CNN can misconstrue anything they want to. Any of you misinformed people who want to make this about race or political affiliation need to get a clue.

Thats not what was said on the 6 pm news. They said he backed out because of all the parents who did not want their children to hear this speech.
In other words, He coward down to a bunch of parents who will watch the speech reaired on the news at supper time while the kids sit there with them. STUPID!

By the way, the speech is 18 min. not a hour as

He made the decision based on the instructional time BEFORE he began getting badgered. His prayers were for the battle he knew he would face because it would be misconstrued into the mess that it is now. Furthermore, when the original speech was discussed, WHICH BY THE WAY WE DIDN'T HEAR because of the controversy, it was slated to be about an hour discussing education, health care and political views. I am still amazed had how stupid people on the net are. The provider is where you are listed as your location, NOT WHERE YOU ACTUALLY LIVE!!!!!My provider is also Embarq so it will say I to live in greenville which is not the case.

My sister called me and told me about this site and I decided to ck it out. I agree with the poster who stated the principle backed down because of the parents. It was 15-18 min's long. They take up more that amount of time with their endless announments every day.I can not believe a parent didnt want their child to be encouraged to stay in school.

I think that there is more issues at hand here,like no money in the schools for them to teach or no child left behind not being addressed, I think instead of complaining about a speech not being shown that you can print off and discuss with your child you should be conforting the state rep's that are using education money to fix the roads, not worry about a speech that each parent should be having with there children daily.

I watched the news and yes the principle did say he decided to not show the speech because of parents conplaints.

Parent from Claremont - Don't post anymore until you get the facts. I am ashamed of Claremont Elementary School for letting a bunch of hicks rule that school. What about the kids who needed and wanted a little encouragement? Right, they can get that from their parents. Truth is that a lot of children do not get any encouragement from their parents and those children still won't because of a lot of loud mouths parents. I guess the principal forgot about all the other kids in that school, who he knows will not see the president's speech at home because their parents could care less about how they do in school. THANKS A LOT PARENT IN CLAREMONT AND PRINCIPAL GIBBS!!! Thanks for looking out for the other children who needed to hear the president - thats putting the less fortunate first.

I just had to reply to your comment - are you for real. You know for a fact that a lot of parents could careless about education and they do not have talks with their kids. Oh, I guess if your child gets that talk and everyone else must be doing it too. I just hope you are not one of the teachers, because you really do not have a clue what is out there. Some of these kids should have and needed to the hear the president, but I guess your church told you to protest and twist the principal's arm for the christians in the school. Thats real christ-like, God would be so proud of you now.

Funny thing is that when my kids were at Claremont all you had had was teachers talking about students/home life and personal issues with other parents at the Claremont Optimist. I sat as my kids played in awe this is the kind of teachers there. Thankfully, my kids are not at Claremont anymore! I do have one qustion for Claremont Parent that is "close" to him. How can one min you don't let kids watch his speech, but yet would welcome him with open arms?. Is that not talking out both sides of your mouth?. Claremont deserves him, they are his speed.

really- I am not sure why you feel the need to attack my comment I am just saying that there are alot of issues in the school system with out the presidents speech being an issue, I am a parent of a special needs child and can't get the help that he needs in the school with out twisting arms, that was my point not that children should or should not hear the president. also I did not discuss any of this with my church???? not sure where that came from. It is just my opinion that there are so many issues in schools right now we just do not need to add to them. If I offended you them I am sorry, and no I am not a teacher just a parent that works from 9-5 trying to make a living for my children. I guess everyone has there own outlook on this and no one will every agree just wanted to share my thoughts

Just wondering if the principle and the parents feel as stupid as they look???And for a principle to allow parents to threaten him into doing something is a shame. I can not believe this man is a principle if he dont have a better back bone than to let the parents tell him what to do!!!!Do you all feel like the fools that you look like now??? also wondering about past presidents speeches? why didnt the parents protest that those speeches were going to take to much time out of their childrens day?
