Cash & Threats: How trial lawyers wielded new power to help blo...

When Sen. Paula Dockery needed friends to help derail Central Florida's commuter-rail deal, she did something once unthinkable for a Republican legislator: She appealed to the state's trial lawyers.

Why was there an immunity clause in the bill? Republicans won't accept responsibility for corporate negligence. Republicans are for corporations and against citizens. That is the thing they need to change if they want to recapture the heart of the people.

Perhaps this was all just a dog and pony show and the "immunity clause" was inserted as the "poison pill".

I agree. Another irresponsible article written by the Sentinel who is out of touch with reality and pandering to a few. If I didn't know better, I would think someone at the Sentinel was trying to kiss up to a different position outside the paper.

If we weren't being screwed by the indemnity clause (making taxpayers pay for all liability if CSX had an accident killing people), maybe the boondoggle would not have been such an easy target.

Who wrote this article? John Mica. Face it, you lost b/c it was a bad deal for everyone.

Dockery & most the rest of the opposition to CFR did not know the immunity clause (the same language as for CFR) was in the Tri Rail package for south Florida? Nice. And they wouldn't have noticed the clause for CFR either if it hadn't been to their advantage. I hope she remembers that she's partnered with the devil so to speak. The trial lawyers are only looking out for their own interests which is mostly about money. They're not out there to "protect" the public. At least in most cases.

Who cares about Lakeland anyway? I am so glad that such a small community can cause a multi-million dollar project that would actually enhance the community....NIMBY the constituents in Lakeland say to the trains.....they suck!

Gas prices continue to rise, but public transportation can't get off the ground. Way to go, USA. Remember to write to Paula when gas gets above $4.00.

I'd be surprised if Paula Dockery gets voted for again. She just wanted 10 minutes of fame and ends up hurting everyone in the process.

I see you're one of those who is easily swayed by biased media. The first sentence should have been a clue.."she did something once unthinkable for a Republican.."

What they are saying is that this is a Democrat tactic that she used and she being a Republican is their way of bashing Republicans which they do when they're not sleeping.

Yes, it's a Democrat tactic to hold off or stop big business in favor of the little guy. I believe this is done for a couple of reasons. One is that Democrats don't understand business, don't want to try to understand business and most importantly, they are against big business because Republicans are for it.

But something interesting in your post is where you say Republicans are "against citizens". Where do you get that from? Do you think you can only be one or the other? Either for business or for people but not both? It's true, if it comes down to a decision that you have to go one way or the other Republicans will probably go with business. Why? It's easy. If you don't have businesses then you have no economy. If you have no economy then you have no jobs for people. If they have no jobs then it requires the government to take care of them. And the government can't take care of them if there are no taxes coming in from the jobs. So yes, Republicans will try to keep businesses going and growing so that will help the people.

That shouldn't be too hard to understand. Is it?

Personally, raising the question about Sovereign Immunity on this trail deal was in the interests of all the people in Central Florida. I know we are mixing topics, and I do support a commuter rail system in our area, however, I fundamentally have a huge problem with the concept of Sovereign Immunity and feel it should be outlawed altogether. Sovereign Immunity is a leftover remnant from the Feudal Period of European rule. The King no longer rules in America, so his Immunity should not stand either.

A Republican didn't want the train coming through her Lakeland, so she teamed up with trial lawyers to kill the project altogether. Not a "can do" attitude.

Trial lawyers are the educated elite class of our society. Sure the give more money to Democrats because Dems believe in larger govt. to control the people's money, and to keep the people dumbed down so only lawyers can fix their lives.

So the trial lawyers fought the provision that would reduce how much they could sue for in an accident. That basically means that a homeless person who sued for twisting their back from sleeping near the rails, could get a ridiculous settlement through the trial lawyers because the rail system didn't plan for cushy cots to sleep on. If you can figure out the logic on that one, then you must be a trial lawyer.

Remember John Edwards, the former presidential candidate and big-time trial lawyer? He was part of the big tobacco lawsuit scheme that cut the industry at its heals. He sued on behalf of the homeless people who were too stupid not to smoke, so his logic was that the tobacco companies didn't provide enough healthcare solutions for their customers with the product. Billion dollar settlements for the stupid smokers!

Lawsuits drive up costs on every product and service. Time for the people to demand caps so we can get the commuter rail back on track.

Whether you are for or against the light rail project; this is rediculous. Our country is so letigious, it makes me sick. The Judicial system is nothing more than a trillion dollar industry that infringes on the people of this country. I'm ready to go back to Europe. They have their problems, no doubt; but at least the betterment of society, the quality of life and social services are at the top of the list. The government fears the people in Europe. In the U.S. the people let the government and lawyers walk all over them; then complain about life in the U.S. What a joke.

Sovereign Immunity is simply the term for controlling how much the lawyers can sue for. With these controls your precious rail costs would go off the tracks! Some concepts just make sense, regardless of what century they originated in.

People like you make me ill. You see politics as nothing more than a sporting event; which team are you on vs. what team another is not on. Meanwhile, while the simple minded like yourself play Monday morning football with real issues, the government and the lawyers swoop in and make the deals.

Too bad CSX could still run trains through Lakeland whether Central Florida gets commuter rial or not. Besides the rail deal is not done.

I don't care for trial lawyers any more than most people. There are more trial lawyers in the phone book than doctors. I wonder why? But watch what the Sentinel has to say on any subject and follow the money. Every thing comes down to the taxpayer. What has the politicians done for the taxpayers and consumers lately

"The fact is, with these big transportation bills, we usually find out what's in them after the fact," Dockery said.

Nice. A confession that our lawmakers know not what they do.

It would be hysterically funny if it wasn't so terribly pathetic.
