3 The land grants were a specific clause of the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which ended the war with Mexcio. The land was guaranteed as part of an international treaty. ANd it was indeed stolen as the Tijerinas have claimed for almost 50 years. In all reality, the government probably owes the citizens billions in revenues it reaped from mineral and gas extraction BUT i beleive they are simply asking for the land back. Some families even have the original deeds! It really is the only right thing to do. |

1 Only specific land grants were excepted from when the NM requested to join the US. Read the Hidalgo Treaty, it is very specific. |

4 I (a poster) understand the history. What I would like to know is what the Bush Administration said when they were given the same request? When were they asked and what was their response? Don't tell me the "victims" waited all this time for an administration and a Supreme Court that tramples on property rights! |

2 Of course the courts told them otherwise - but it cost us 10's of thousands to defend what we already owned. Oh, I understand history...it is they who do not get it! |

4 if the land were returned to its rightful owners, it would NOT be sold. The land grants were an integral part of the traditional lifestyle of the culture in northern NM and was communally owned and held. It could NOT be sold. When the land was taken, the people were not compensated in any way and are still struggling today (four generations later) to maintain their cultural heritage in the north, which is intricately tied to the land, ranching, and sustainable use of natural resources. To So What: it appears that your cultural heritage is not from the north, where tis issue is still very much pertinent. I agree that gangs and drugs are awful problems in the rest of the state (a problem in the north, too) and, if this is where your heritage lies, I suggest that you become active in combatting the problems and correcting the injustices you see in the area of your historical residency. Please, please become educated. Reies Lopez Tijerina (Rose's father) was active since the early 1960's advocating for the preservation of cultural heritage in the north. Keeping that culture alive is dependent largely upon the land that all northern peoples have ties to. |

1 I know only bits and pieces regarding Northern NM, so I cannot speak with resolve concerning that. I do know about Westland (Atrisco) inside and out. They sold some of their property along the Rio Grande in the 40's and came back more than 50 years after the fact trying to reclaim it. They had divided the "common lands" into 5 acre parcels and gave it to their heirs; who...on the very same day sold it. This land was also part of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. I hope that is less confusing for everyone posting. |

4 To bad to sad. The key word is when the U.S. took over. Face it the property does not belong to Mexico or Spain anymore. In fact if it did, the U.S. should charge them for back taxes. Ha Ha. |

4 Then the Land Grant Owners can return it to the Native Americans, and the Native Americans can return it to... Where exactly do you want to draw this line in the sand? |

2 Original deeds are only a part of the chain of title; which is the ONLY thing that matters when recorded in the public record. You must have title - a deed is worthless without title. I still have the original deeds from prior property ownership. |
