Archuleta is one of the oldest surnames of New Mexico. Archuleta is not an spanish surname. Artxuleta is a basque surname. Archuleta: Surname of Basque origin. The word artxuleta, originates from the Basque words haritz, which means “oak tree,” and eta meaning “a place of.” Hence, Archuleta refers to “the place of oak trees.” Among the early explorers was Asencio de Archuleta, the son of Juanes de Archuleta, from Eibar in Gipuzcoa, Basque Country, who traveled to New Mexico in 1598 with Don Juan de Oñate. He married Lugarda Quintana, by whom he had three children, Cristóbal, Juana Josefa, and Nicolás Marcos, according to a will made by Lugarda Quintana, in 1749 when Asencio was absent from New Mexico

I believe it is ok to tell your workers to speak english as we are in America, but to change your name is asking to much.

Keeping their name is fine as long as they don't get all bent out of shape when you ask them how to pronounce it (that has happened to me). On the other hand, it's HIS place. He gets to make the rules. I've known of new owners who have fired everybody, hired a whole new crew who will be amenable to the 'new' rules.

"Taos is so unique that you would not do anything in Taos that you would do elsewhere," Every town thinks they are unique. Guess what? You're not unique. There are dozens of towns across the sw U.S. that are just like Taos. This guy is right to ask that English be spoken in his hotel, but to ask them to change their names was not a good move. The employees should speak in English except to guests that first speak Spanish to them.

He has the right to hire who he see fits He has the right to ask for "English speaking " he did go to far as to change their given name he has NO right to ask for that! If it was that importand to him, he should have hired people with names that fit his criteria PS. before people start crying rascism about the English speaking part, just a hint, in CA job ad's ask for Bi-lingual, around here that means Spanish, however it was explained to me(since I am bi-lingual, just not in Spanish) it would be discrimination to post it in a direct manner

"Fired hotel manager Kathy Archuleta says the workers initially tried to adjust to his style. "We had already gone through four or five owners before him, so we knew what to expect," Archuleta says. "I told (the workers) we needed to give him a chance." So...they ran over 5 managers with their behavior and work ethic, and when the new one stepped up and told them to F-off, they got bent out of shape. No wonder...they must have gotten their way with the previous managers, or they would have been fired then.

He simply needs to sell the hotel and move to a conservative community where lawful residents can work lawfully. Let the liberals in his community deal with the vacant hotel and loss of jobs if they want to ensure illegal immigrants who can't speak English wish to be employed! The mans my hero!

Name change requirements for front desk employees sounds just fine. He's the boss and this is a free country and those not wanting to play by his rules have the freedom of choice to not work for him and leave or they will be fired. Their choice plain and simple. What a bunch of Liberal losers!

Read a history book before you open you mouth to show that empty space. There is nothing about immigration in this story. These families have lived in New Mexico for centuries. The outsider is Whitten.

I used to be a lot more sympathetic to their cause until I realized they are deliberately overbreeding as part of their "reconquista" scheme. In other words, they are still fighting the war of 1848, and quite willing to bring ecological collapse if that what it takes. Sorry, I won't pretend I don't notice. Clearly you have never been in Taos. Don't talk if you don't know.
